Garage mechanic broke my windscreen.
« on: January 23, 2006, 12:21:43 »
The garage that so far have done one hell of a job on refurbishing my 90, broke my windscreen whilst replacing it :x . The boss of the garage said they had trouble refitting it & it broke, something to do with new seal being thicker???? They ordered new windscreen and window fitter couldn't get it to fit, apparently they had to trim quarter of an inch off glass to get it to fit. AM I BEING SCAMMED???? AM I RESPONSIBLE FOR COST OF NEW SCREEN?????

Thanks guys, but what about having to trim the glass and also they said windscreen fitter could not fit the new screen. Something doesnt sound right. I would of thought a replacement screen would go straight in.

unless the laws of physics are slightly different north of the border then no..how the hell did the neatly trim a 1/4 inch off the screen...ive never seen it done with safety glass..maybe im wrong but i would say they broke it they replace it. If they scratched the paint they would so that and not charge you for their mistake would they.

One thing that can affect windscreens going back in can be rusty panels where the joint has splayed spreading the metal. The seal then won't sit right and the glass can break as it goes back in if they are over eager.

I'd have thought they should have recognised the fact that the glass wasn't going back if they were experienced fitters.

If it's the old rubber going back then it can be a fragment of glass in the rubber. If they've done work on the framework then it may have been the wrong size somewhere.

No they did nothing to the framework, the seal i got them to order a new one before they took the old one out, as it was splitting/cracking and didnt look too healthy. After they broke the screen they had a proffessional screen fitter bring and fit the new one, it was then "so they say" that they had to trim the screen to enable the "proffessional" fitter to fit it.
There company insurance should cover them shouldn't it????

I would have thought if you have spent before with them their lack of "customer service" ie they broke it they fix it........is sadly missing ,tell  them  you will think where you will spend your money  next time .

Yeah, it's quite common to break them when you fit new rubbers... that's why most of the mobile windscreen fitters won't put a new seal in for you if they do a screen replacement... even if you supply the seal.

That said, the vehicle was in their care when the screen was broken, so as far as I'm concerned they are liable.   Unless you supplied the screen and seal, and they can prove it was faulty, they need to be paying for it.  Simple as that.

Thanks everyone  :D  :D  appreciate all the advice/comments. I'll have a chat with the garage owner when the bill arrives, be a shame to have to take my 90 elsewhere, especially cos all the work theyve done over the past year on previous vehicles was to such a high standard. Ive been well happy up until now.

Its very simple.

They have a "duty of care" to ensure that it all goes back as should be.  They also have a duty to "show a reasonable level of expertise" in their chosen vocation.

Bottom line .... it was broken whilst in thier care and control, they pay.  If they insist other wisw, a quick call to the trading standards will sort it out.

It's amazing what dealing with customers for 18 years teaches you!
