Disco Rev Counter in 90
« on: January 23, 2006, 17:48:58 »
I'd quite like a tacho/rev meter in the 90 (early 200 tdi engine in a 90 td).. Is there a tacho output generator on this engine?  I know there was something like that on the discovery to drive the rev counter.

Any one have any info - if there is, is it a case of simply bolting on an aftermarket meter and if it is how many pulses per rotation does it need to be set to?

thanks!
Matthew

from what i've found out the rev counter takes it's signal from the w terminal on the alternator, and the rev counter has swtiches on the back to calibrate it. not found part nos yet for the rev counter tho.

I wonder if I coudl hook up the old disco one to the defender.. I'll go check the wiring diagram.. I wonder how on earth you calibrate it against an alternator!

well it seems to work - no idea how accurate it is.  (Discovery rev counter wired into a 90)

My lumpy low tick over registgers at about 300 rpm, and the governor kicks in at around 3500 rpm.

Got to build some kind of case for it and figure out what to do with the fuel gauge and oil temp gauge (and how to switch off fuel warning light) but apart from that it seems to work well and is a cheap way of getting a rev counter in :)

It has been done before

Tom Sheppard (of LR expeditions fame) had his 90Tdi totally revamped internally & a marvellous (& logical) job it was too

They used the Discovery 300 instrument pod
Still got the feature down in the snug (LRO March 95 from memory)

No technical information was included, just the reasons for doing it & the benefits (still an interesting read though)
