Engine Vibration In 300tdi disco

Hi, I need help, at 2000-2500 revs in all gears and with the clutch disengaged my whole car vibrates, all mounts are secure, but the whole engine and gearbox has alow vibration and its bloody annoying! Garage says maybe misalligned clutch? can anyone help Please!!!

is it a diesel or a V8? does it vibrate when the clutch is engaged?

Possibly poor compression on one cylinder. Cracked piston/rings or bent conrod.

Dodgy injector or pump causing a missfire.

Does the vibration go away when you step of the throttle? does it happen when driving?

Try to establish whether it's power elated or speed-related, then you will have some idea.

Was there ever an answer to this? I have a very similar problem. No it doesn't go away under power. Its not to evident coasting or at idle.

How do you detect a misfire or any of the other problems mentioned?

Anyway Felix, IIUC you have the vibration, not at idle but mid-power range and when under load, not when coasting.

Does it not do it when you rev the engine up in neutral?

It sounds like a power related vibration so all the above could be relavent.

Compression test requires a special tester, a petrol car tester won't work.

A misfire could be due to a dodgy injector, these can be tested on a special rig, or a faulty pump, again a specialist job.  One very messy way of testing it yourself is to loosen the pipe union to each cylinder in turn and observe the resulting drop in power.

But I just have to point out that a vibration under power could also be transmission related, like a UJ on it's way out (let's hope so)

I'd second the comment about a UJ - I had one go and it felt just like a misfire under power.

I do hope its that but with the list of other things going wrong who knows.

The rear sunroof has started to leak and in a big way today!

I assume prop shaft UJ rather than axle CVs at the front?

I did recently replace the front disks could it be related to the stub axle shims - I kinda didn't bother checking these as it was freezing out and just replaced the ones the came off.

Well I can offer a ray of sunshine.

My front prop UJ was going and coasting no vibration, blip the engine no vibes but up a hill with a bit of go go and it vibtrated away like mad.

I'd make a date with your prop and see if there's any play. Having just replaced both UJ I can say it's not hard but it can be an awkward job to do as those needles seem to be keen to make a break for freedom!

FWIW I too would just put the same shims back that came off.

I can't see that they disc would be out of balance could you?

Check your viscus fan is intact......I had a blade snap off and made the whole car vibrate !!!!

As long as you didn't touch the bearings then the original shims will be fine, otherwise I check them with feeler guages.  The disks shoudn't be causing those symptoms and nor should the CV, my favourite is on the UJ  for now, unless it is the engine (and we don't want it to be).  If the vibration came from the wheels it would also come up through the steering.

Hi again

Its defo engine related and not drive train. I have an Auto and the vibration is at its worse at 2k RPM give or take 100 and nothing like as bad either side of this. Kinda like the vibration in your phone.

Could it be some vibration in the turbo or is it still more likely to be an ignition probelm? I have noticed that it is becoming dificult to start ie. Start and let go the key and then it cuts out and you have to restart it then its fine. I think it even does this when warm.

Can't see why you're saying it's not the UJ in the prop shaft - that's what I'd check and double check.

Because its an auto the engine speed varies dramaticaly compared to wheel speed. So with the drive train turning at constant revs its possible to vary the engine speed bringing it in and out of the zone that causes the vibration. Its quite noticibly not related to the drive train. It has to be engine problem or back as far as the torque converter.

I am going to change the filter and see if that helps.

One other possibilty is the flexi plate on the torque converter.

The turbo isn't big enough to give you vibration, plus they rev so fast.
