There are some muppets on the roads at the minute!!
« on: February 01, 2006, 17:07:43 »
Been out and about today and the standard of driving i have seen is laughable to say the least
Coming up the M3 from eastleigh it narrows to 2 lanes so i,m stuck behind the usual 2 lorries trying to get past each other, this is not going to be quick as they were evenly matched so i drop in behind the one on the inside lane.
Spotty yoof in diesel maestro then comes up on my outside and sits about 2" off rear of overtaking truck dodging to the outside to see round then towards me to see down the middle of the 2   this he does until the one he is behind is halfway past then he sits with his hand on the horn trying to get past , 1, driver of truck cant hear horn anyway 2, how did he think truck is going to get out of his way then?
this goes on until trucks pass and the overtaking one pulls in whereby the yoof commences with hand signals to the driver before racing off in excess of 90mph
And the government say i need driving lessons cos i,m in a van

well it wernt me he was stuck behind cos i know i shouldnt but when a pratt dos that behind me i just pull leave with the truck i am overtaking and have a chat with him for a few mins before slowly pulling in front and pulling over at a safe distance from the wagon infront. then i just wave and smile nicely at them  . It dos seam that lots of car drivers are unawear of the speed limits and restrictors that us hgv drivers have to stick to

Yeah i know what you mean.
I always thought compulsory re-tests every 5 years would get rid of most of the bad drivers on the roads today, but it wouldnt. We're always going to suffer them.

true just wish they would either put hgv speed limit signs under the normal speed limit signs or have something in the test about hgv's and the laws we have to stick to. I once had a car driver ring me boss up at work and complain as i was doing 40mph on a single carrigway that had 60mph signs on it. :?  And he was shock to hear that i had to obay different speed limits to him. The boss rung me and told me about the car behind and the fact he apoligised so i slow down and signaled him pass. And he gave a nice wave, which makes a change

i nearly took out a heard of ramblers!

pottering down a narrow, tight hill, passed a couple, slowed to give em room etc... exchanged "afternoon" and went round the bend......

...must have been 20, now bear in mind at this point the exhaust was suffering from leprosy, its fair to say they must have heard me!

however, it seems they though shear numbers make them invincible, a few turned round, then turned back and carried on walking! i prayed that my bullbar was on, but it didnt happen, it must have been 5 mins before the gormless sods decide that it would be ok to step on the grass verge and let me pass.

how rude!

Ja`s new pet hate - Red socked ramblers! (they seem to be the most stubborn variety)

Old drivers do my head in.  They are soooooooooo slow and think that they own ALL the road - their side and the other.  Even my father in law nearly wiped me out, and never even noticed it was me!

my father in law fell asleep at a set of traffic lights   he woke up when they changed for the third time and thought everyone was overtaking him so cut them all up as he went across, thing is no one stopped to see why he was not moving though

And here I was thinking I had had an original idea :D:D:D

@Muddysteve: Ever tried driving a lorry? We do need to overtake sometimes, and since Mr Blair has decided to fit us with limiters 4-6 MPH under our legal speed limit, while dutifully forgetting to fit them in other vehicles, we are quite frankly [!Expletive Deleted!] when it comes to do speedy overtakings.

Next time I have to overtake because the lorry in front of me is travelling at 45mph, I'll make sure there's no one less than a mile behind me, and I will ring the emergency services to provide me with an escort.

The limiters are a good idea imo, because seeing the stopping distance of an 8 Legger + 21 Tonne of stone at 56mph any more would be catastophic. Although you can get 70 out of them on a good down hill when loaded.

Seeing as this thread is here, I'm going to use it to vent my spleen.

What is it with people in this country and being completely incapable of using multilane roads?  Heading up the A1 last night to meet with the North Eastern Mud Club types, there were mobile works in lane 1, with a crash cushion truck complete with absolutely huge, brightly lit 'keep right' arrow, which I managed to spot from a good half mile away, and made the required move into lane 2 in plenty of time.  Why then, was there a bunch of near stationary vehicles in lane 1, trying to force their way into lane 2, which by this point was doing 40mph+?  Muppets.  No forward planning, some people.

And then there was the chap I encountered on Christmas Day.  Hardly anyone else on the road, as I headed down I encountered this chap sitting in lane 2, doing 50mph.  Of course, being the good law-abiding driver that I am, I did the right thing, and moved from lane 1, all the way out to lane 3 in order to overtake.  Pillock.

just to add to my reply before for anyone not sure
hgv speed limits are
single carriageway (60mph for cars) 40mph
duel carriageway (60mph for cars) 50mph
motoway (70mph for cars) 60mph but restricted to 56mph.

and like a sign i saw on a truck a bit back" car drives complaned we were going to fast so we got restricted so now you are stuck behind me"

And the limits were brought in when trucks still had drum brakes and nothing else were as my truck has vented disc brakes, exhurst brake, engine retarder, abs, traction control, anti wheel spin. And empty can out brake a car, when fully loaded it takes about 4x the normal car stopping distance. and i hate car drivers who jump infront of me when i am slowing down towards traffic lights, roundabour etc as i have to alter my brake distance and normally end up haveing to stand on the brakes as they have just taken my braking distance in half.
Rant over for now :D

sorry i may have omitted it was a diesel turbo and yes it was capable of 90+ because it had me behind him

speed limiters were a good idea yes but they should have been set to 60mph not 56mph the bit of leeway the 4mph gives you to overtake would prevent some of the bunching you get of trucks all doing the same speed

I dissagree, it's far better than what we have now, ie nothing.  I'm firmly in favour of compulsery re-testing, the biggest problem is that drivers don't drive the way they were taught. most of them couldn't pass the test they originally took, let alone the modern test.  Plus if all drivers were re-tested insurance companies could insist that you took the test in your own car, that would get a few inapropriate vehicles off the school run given that the person at the wheel often can't drive it properly

Plus it would deal with the 'driving pensioner' question, wouldn't it?
