I had a little mishap in the 'passion-skip' today; I broke the cam-belt (looks like the water pump's gone kaput

) A friend has very kindly sent me diagrams and distructions to do the job, but I have no torque wrench for the crankshaft pulley bolt, is there a kind person locally who would trust me with theirs for the weekend please? - I'm very willing to try to do it myself, but any assistance from anyone who knows how to do it properly would be most gratefully recieved.

I may be wrong but doesn't the crankshaft pullet need torqueing up to something ridiculous? IE if you aint Godzilla ya need a very long bar?

umm, 95 NM + 30 deg + 15 deg, which, I must admit means very little to me!!! - I know the NM = Newton Meters, but further than that....... :?
Do I need to hire me a super-hero?

I'm no expert, but if you need some lanky oik with long hair to lean on spanners I could quite happily volunteer :-) Will have to bring the ankle biters .... and I don't have a torque wrench ;( got everything else tho!

Well, if you want to come and play spanners Neil, you'd be most welcome, (and the anklebiters, of course!) not sure about getting it done tomorrow now, as it seems that I need to comp test it before pulling it apart, Stevemids has kindly offered me the loan of his, but I don't know when I can get it.
Looks like I'm going to be using HL for work on Sunday :(biggrin):

ah, sorry J-W I didn't explain what kind of skip it was! mea culpa, yes, tis my workaday hack; I'm a little miffed, as I've only had it a month or so, and I feel a bit of a muppet, cos I did suspect that it might be the water pump, when it wasn't the alternator fan making that godawful racket, but didn't realise the damage potential!! :(bigcry):
It's a 1400 petrol BTW.

sweet,if its a 1400 petrol "should" be an 8 valver which "normally" dont do any damage when the belt goes,

Hmmm, I'm getting REALLY confuzzled now!! So many engine variants, special tools, I've been told I'm BOUND to have bent valve stems, now that I might have escaped - :shock: right now I'm thinking phoning a garage and getting them to do it might be the lesser headache!!

when are you fixing it Janie??

might be worth just itting the new pump and belt and starting it up, if it runs o.k then nowts bent. as far as i can remember they don't do damage if your lucky. Are you fixing it at your house??

If it's the standard Vauxhall 8-valve overhead cam engine, and I suspect it is, the cam followers are designed to snap therfore preventing valve damage, so it's easier to fix :D

As a bonus it's possible you don't have to remove the crank pulley bolt at all, on my Cavalier the alternator belt pulley bolts to the timing belt sprocket with 4 small bolts, the big one in the middle I think you can leave. If it does have to come off I'm sure you can get at the bolt with the car still on 4 wheels, if you have enough extensions. Put it in 5th and you can remove it on your own.

I'd suggest a Haynes manual though, just to be sure, they're actualy quite good for the Astra

Well, I've just been to see the 'nice man' at the motor spares shop up the road; the bits are cheap enough; Ã‚Â£7 for the belt and Ã‚Â£16 for the pump, at those prices, and from the last couple of posts, it's sounding a bit more 'cope-with-able' I think I'll order the belt (it'll be monday, ay least before they can get it) and buy the book of lies. They only have the 'service and repair' version, not the 'workshop manual' which is a bit of a shame, since the latter have more info in them, might get HL fired up and have a pootle to Halfrauds, see if they have one...
Neil, yes, it'll be done in "Janie's pavement workshop" - bit miffed at the belt not being in stock actually, at least it's warmed up today; what's the betting it freezes again as soon as I get the bits.........

I would like to propose a toast to Mr Neil Thorne knight in shining armour and spanner-wielder extraordinare who arrived at Chez Gert a couple of hours ago and has taken the offending article to bits!! :D So far, it looks like I have been lucky; 3 broken cam-followers, but it looks like the valve-stems might be ok! :D The parts are on order, and all that remains is to 'persuade' the stubbornly seized-on water pump to detatch itself, and reassembly can commence!
