I see you live just 'down the road' from one of my favourite 'foreign towns'

I can't wait to see the Midland Hotel when it's finished, hopefully they'll retain the basic style, even though all the best bits are long gone
The Winter Gardens are also being restored.

Have a look at the old postcards on this site; Val Cox (I can remember the Super Swimming Stadium in use as simply a pool)

Certainly not as good as it was not so many years ago, hopefully with the midland hotel renovation and other investment coming into the area, it will pick up a little, and start attracting back the visitors it needs.

I went almost every year between the ages of about 5 & 11 on the train from Leeds. When Marine Road station was still open
I also remember the fun-fair at the top of the hill in Heysham & the pub (Crab Inn??) that sold Nettle Beer

I certainly hope so. I remember it being open & wanting to go into this strange, but gorgeous building.
There's a lot of other 'Art-Deco' buildings/features around Morecambe, there'seven organised walking tours on certain weekends

Once the Midland is reopened & the Winter Gardens are complete, as a concert/conferance centre, the economy will pick up I'm sure.

I'll be back over the Pennine soon, probably as soon as the steam bus is back on the road.

As An Aside; have you read the excellent book by Roger Bingham; 'Lost Resort'??

You might get it in the local library, or in the second-hand bookshop near Alderman Birketts clock-tower (if it's still open?)

Not read the book, must admit not a great reader.

Have only been living here for about a year after moving from burnley, but spent many a weekend on holiday when younger.

The midland should look great when finished as the exterior must remain virtually unchanged under the terms of the planning permission as it is a listed building.

Personally I thnik it will the turning point of the whole area redevelopment, especially if the new link road gets the go ahead, and once opened more and more companies will want a piece.  Just hope it does not turn into another blackpool.

New link road from M6 direct to heysham, which should hopefully avoid you having to go through lancaster one way system... which is a bonus.

Great \:D/
Anything that helps avoid the Lancaster one-way is useful.
It's a nightmare, sometimes I come across via the A683 through Caton & Hornby, then you enter Lancaster under the M6 & queue all the way (leaving A65 just north-west of Ingleton)

So most times when I come over, I tend to travel up the A65 as far as Kirkby Lonsdale & come into Carnforth - through Whittington & Arkholme (I still miss SteamTown  )

I think I've been through at some point :?
Last time I was in that particular patch was when we stopped over at Silverdales in October 2004 at Holgates Caravan Site 'Morecambe; The Return'

My grandad used to work out of Silverdale Quarry till they shut it down, it was really unique as the only way in was over the railway line.

If you ever find yourself around this area again, just say something and I may be able dig something up.
