Off Road Advice needed

as you know i'm involved with St John Ambulance in Bucks supporting such people as Green Day Oasis, Alice Cooper and Deep Purple and such other events.

My Name and Mud Club's was mentioned last week at a meeting with ref to doing some basic off-road driver training, as we in the county have a 110 and an old series 3 Ambulance and there's only a few people who can actualy drive them properly.

So I'm now starting to write a document using the old land rover vehicle pack which has some excellent stuff in but also I need the club member's help & advice in possible training the drivers on a Weekend for few hours and given them a basic starter pack.

The hows what not to do and what to do.

what i have said is i'll get the document written then we need to look at insurance ect before we get to the next stage of taking people out and volunteers required.

You might want to speak to Hants area. Someone ran something similar after the 110's went and we got the Crusaders. Was a sight, lots of 04 reg Crusaders coated in crap :) I beleive there also may be one more 110 left thats will get scrapped when the Cursader arrives.

I think the guy you might want to speak to at Winchester HQ is David Chant. Failing that Liz at Southampton East might know something.

Its going back to the 70s but I used the old series ambulances for quite a time until we went onto the 1 tonners, two words that were always upmost in the drivers thought was top heavy :)

They are so different to the normal 109's, but quite a challange

Absolutely. Unless you're qualified to do so, with the proper bit of official paper (which you may have access to), then DON'T use the word 'training'. It suggests a legal competance and an acceptance of liability.

To be honest, unless you have that bit of paper, I'd leave the whole can-of-worms well alone. It's what certain companies are there for - over-priced as they may be.

I won't train anyone for anything, but in the right circumstances I could contribute towards obtaining informal experience (that wasn't an offer BTW    ).

Acutally - are you qualified to drive a 4x4 amubulance off-road? Whilst you might be more than capable, we get back to the 'bit o'paper' thing again!

I'm not trying to find excuses, I'm just making sure we've got your backside well and truly covered!

True well said eeyore as you know dazza up untill lately my main role has been "health and safety at work".Ive had to deal with 5 serious incidents all resulting in litigation.And unless anyone who has acreditation is doing the training then its a case of leave well alone.Sorry to [throw it] on anyones chips and I realy dont wont to dampen your ardour,for what is a noble gesture.But ive seen the "personal injury boys"in action and believe me its not pretty.And as an aside unfortunatly if you did go ahead with your idea no mention could be made off mud club as then your in the realms of corperate litigation.I.E. insurance's ,statement of terms etc.That said if you gave someone PRIVATE lessons with a signed discloser etc thats a differant matter.Hope this helps dazza give me ring if you need to clarify

After thinking about this i think it should be called Off road awareness that way we are not training just giving an over view of what the vehicles can do.

The Document will be given to a Senior Training Advisor in My Local Ambulance Service to looked at 1st as he teaches Blue Light Training to Ambulance crews and and has more driving qualifiaction's than anything.

Like you i just want to make sure we are covered.

I havent taught professionally but I have done the EMS driving courses and done assessments for SJA.

As eyore said wanna make sure backs are covered legaly and everything else.
