Sorry Chuggaman, your thread disapeared on me but I managed to copy & paste the posts into here, although in reverse order.
I've also gone for the D44 Carrier but I think there is space to re-drill the holes on the original to raise it up the door enough?? :D

Bolt it onto a roof rack?
I remember there being a device which fastens on to the carrier and has a set of raised studs on it to mount the wheel higher up. No idea where I saw it though

i have worked out how to fit a 36"wheel with tyre onto a standard disco spare wheel carrier on the back door.
with no welding or mods!!
