Finally got my copy of LRO and theres a story in there about how organised gangs are targeting Disco's & Defenders, apparently these vehicles are being stolen at an alarming rate.
I'll keep my eyes peeled up here in scotland for it.

sorry to hear that another LR has gone missing. i will keep my eyes open down here.
after reading that article in LRO i have become more worried about my disco. i want to make it more sercure. it has the alarm an imobiliser on it but i dont think its enough. even i could get past that and im a dummy when it comes to things like that. i have thought about putting a stop lock on the steering wheel but i dont want to give them something to break the steering lock with. so mu next option is to run a chain around the clutch pedal and through bottom link on the steering wheel and pull it tight. not sure how well this will work. just thought it might stop them having the leaverage to break the steering lock.....
so are there any good ways to put the scum off then???
cheers

Thats a good idea I will do that chain idea too. Oh hang on it has no clutch pedal!

I think the only way of stopping the b******ds is to catch them at it and report them. I had a mate about a year ago who was woken in the night by their neighbour phoning them and saying do you know there are people taking the body pannels off your defender? and when they phoned the police the land line got cut and so too was the neighbours line. To go to the lengths of taking the landy appart on a drive! I cant do it in daylight let alone quietly in the dark!

If they want your disco they will have it and there is nout you can do I feel. You can either make it as hard as poss so they think twice about the effort or make it easy and hope you have all your toys insured with a good ins co.

Still wont stop em lifting it, but PM'ing another member had a thought...

Thos of us parked on our own land, 4 rawl bolds into the ground and use a big-ass bike lock to actually lock it down, visibly. Guess there isnt any reason you couldnt lock it to street furniture. Silly looking, and low tech, but its another 10 mins faffing about for the would be theif.
I must confess the the activities of the UK governments for the past couple of years have been watched with frank admiration and amazement by Lord Vetinari. Outright theft as a policy had never occured to him.

you could make a bar up that locks between the two front doors as in one long bar from ns door to os door and if you have it so it is at least 5 inches above the seats they cant sit in it. you would have to put in across the doors as you are sat in the back then just get out and lock it job done. I do a similer thing in my truck with a two ton strap stops anybody from opening the doors

No, unlikely. But its got a good engine, gearbox, axles, steering box, vin plate, and plenty of other snippets of significant cash value.

Chances are, they are exactly the right parts somebody will have already paid the blaggards for.

I've known of even more 'distinctive' vehicles that that one go missing.

Sad world.

Ta for the support guys.

For £399 installation and then either £10 a month or £325 for the lifetime of ownership, its a little price to pay for one of the best methods of security and recovery

It's all well and good tracking them but they still have to be recovered. I read in a trucking magazine a few months ago, of a van that was stolen. The police tracked it to a pikey campsite but refused to go in and get it. Some time later when the pikeys had moved on the van was found stripped and burnt out.

Very sensible course of action, I will be taking the same route soon as I can afford it. Freind of mine in London had her car stolen, the police recovered it within an hour of it being reported, found it in a lock up garage.

Trackers are a good idea, my dad has one on his wagon (When you've spent around 60K you want to protect it). I would be looking into one for when I get my car, but for over £700 for a lifetime membership it fare eats into the modification budget.

Basically, if a theif wants your car then they are going to take it, but it's your job to make it as hard as possible for them to do it. I found the best way is to make sure whenever we have a car on the drive it's parked behind my dads van (he goes out at like 5am so it's clear whenever the car is moved) then theres one more obsticle for them to get round.

There are nice simple solutions too :

1. Remove HT lead and keep in house.
2. Remove rotor arm.
3. Be git and pull the fuel pump fuse :-)

Of course these only work on a petrol version. Having an auto that won't start makes it slightly harder for them to move and get up onto to a low loader ;-)

The only problem with a Tracker is that you have to realise that some scrote has nicked the motor, then phone up the Tracker peeps to get the device activated - only once it's been activated will it show up on the Plods in-car receivers !

In theory, your pride & joy could get nicked late at night, trailered away and burned out/stripped before you've got out of bed the next morning - waste of loads of beer tokens

I reckon, what's needed is a physical method of disabling/securing the motor - something that will involve lots of noise to get around, so just maybe the scrotes will think twice about nicking the motor. I remember some guy (in South Africa ?) having flaming gas jets under the car - if you got too close (after a warning), you got torched !!!

What about just attatching lots of chains to the car that hang of the wheels, bumper, axle, chassis etc so if it were moved it would make loads of noise or the scrotes would be there for ages either cutting them or cable tieing them up but on the wheels it would be tricky to tie them up as it will put the balance out too and be like spokey dokeys on a bike but a big boys toys version!

Ive already got a Clifford Concept 600 with Pager on mine :)  Tilt and Lift sensors + promiximity that screaches at you with quite a peircing sound.

This would be the icing on the cake so to speak and Im sorry but for either £399 + £10 a month or the 700 ish lifetime cost that is a small price to pay for something that would probably have cost you 4000 ish+ not including your mods plus your own personal pleasure in making it YOUR landy.

Im sure everyone could sacrfice some beer tokens in order to keep their landy safe.

Wouldnt you be even more [!Expletive Deleted!] off if you wrote your landy off a week after you subscribed to the for life option! Risk you take I guess.

I have a tracker in my caravan which uses a mobile phone. I have the phone hidden in my caravan that is connected to the battery 24/7 which in turn is being charged up by a solar pannel. I have registered the phone with www.followus.co.uk and you can track the phone down to the nearest mast. If the caravan is stolen and being towed it will pass through various masts and narrow down where it is in the world to a 10mile radius of the mast or you may even be able work out which road it is going along if a pattern emerges. Also all you have to pay 5p for everytime to track a phone and 10p i think to register a phone and the phone but everyone has an old phone lying about. I believe that even some insurance companies are alowing this method to be used as a tracker device.

A trackers ok... unless people know where it's fitted!!!

The ones I've seen in some Defenders (for example) weren't hard to find... an other example is a Escort Cosworths.  The favorite place to fit the tracker was on top of the fuel tank - but obviously the thieves found this out.

And I've heard there are ways to get around trakers (and other such devices)....

Mobile phone trackers, are ok.... unless you take it to one of the numerous places where you do not get signal - often country side areas, underground carparks etc etc.

Whilst I agree, any device is a good idea... if somebody want's your car, then they'll take it.

I know of somebody who had an Impreza....

Had all CAT 1 alarms, was parked behind security posts on his drive etc etc...

How did they nick his car????

They shot him in the leg when he went to the shops and took the keys.

I know of two other people who again had various devices on their cars... but were threated with serious bodily harm unless they handed over the keys (in this case a Civic Type R and a Sierra Cosworth).

The other favorite trick is to break into someones house to get the keys.

It is a sad, sad world when you can't even have a nice car, without the worry of someone pinching it...

I always remember my brothers Metro (not even a nice car)....

Was outside of the house when someone tried to nick it.... bodged the doors lock, ignition barrell etc etc.... but they couldn't get it started..

Did it have the ultimate form of security???

Not really, but it didn't have the cylinder head fitted at the time!!!

At the end of the day, you can make it harder for theives... but it's unlikely you can make a car 100% impossible to pinch!!!

Its true if they want to nick it they will. Mine is insured for £4000, but any key will open it and start it. But you have know how to heat the glow plugs before it will start.

But its not the cost of a replacement, its the cost of all the work you have done to it.

Without sounding rude... unless it's freezing cold, any diesel will start without the glow plugs - just takes a bit longer.... unless the thieves got a can of easy start.

Any thief with any knowledge will now that all he needs is a couple of lengths of wire to start most diesels - all under bonnet.

Hence why on most diesels (older ones esp.) an immobiliser is pointless.

At the end of the day, you can do everything you can to make it harder.... but if a 'more professional' thief will know how to get around most security devices.

Thats my point. But mine will not start with the heater plugs working. To look at mine it looks like a bag of s**t. But its whats under the skin. I havd a shock to what it all added up to when I went to get it insured. For a battered 2 door RRC £4000 would seem a lot.

The other day some guy in a white transit pulled up on the drive and offered to buy my Disco. Totally out of the blue, did ring the bell though. Was crawling all over the motor by the time SWMBO got out to him.   She was the only one in and gave him no info but unfortuantely didn't get his number. Very suspicious - if you are this guy - sorry mate its not for sale! Same thing happened to my father-in -law in Wiltshire.... mmmmm!

The Tracker is one that needs to be well placed. The one on my dads wagon for example is welded inside a box which is then welded onto the chassis near the engine, I'd like to see them get that off in a hurry.

I don't know which one it is but one of the trackers has a built in alarm, if it's moved without your knowing it contacts it's control, who ring you to let you now you car's being knicked, as most are knicked in the wee small hours.

I've heard of cars being repsrayed and/or plates changed then being hidden in plain sight whils the dust settles, then being moved on if not found with 48 hours, just in case it has a tracker.
