should i buy or should i walk
« on: February 11, 2006, 16:07:32 »
i have seen an Nreg tdi discovery
74,thou on the clock looks tidy on the outside
it will have a full MOT pdi and a 3 month engine adn gearbox warrenty
for £3995

or i could have a 12 month MOT and take it away for £3500

the only thing putting the wife off it is the fact that it has been stood for a number of months on the forecourt and it
STINKS INSIDE the plastics are mouldy (easy cleaned) but the headlining and at leasty one of the seats has spots of mould (we think) as well , how easy is it to clean could a valeter clean this (a valeter is someone who cleans the inside of the before anyone asks   )
also osr door and back door dont open how easy are these to open
the colour is silver with a blue fleck in it doesnt look an original colour but doesnt look to be done recently

what do you lot think

If it stinks inside surely it is leaking.  I would want to know what the leak is because it isn't that cheap.

So they want £495 to warrenty the engine and box for 3 months.  Thats more than my Landrover warrenty of all bits cost for a year.  Sound like they are pretty sure that somthing is going to fail.

Also, if its a dealer, don't they have to give 3 months warrenty anyway?

Walk there are lots for sale

But you could get your own warranty for a lot less BTW the dealer has to sell a fit for purpose car

this guy wants to clear the forecourt of px's and cheap cars
he prefers 10 grand BM's on the forecourt
this is one he had around for a while and he wants shut
and he would have valleted for the higher price
i am thinking i can repair most things like the doors are am i better off with £500 in my pocket for things like allisport intercooler etc  8)

Smelly inside says the sun roofs are leaking and the boot floor is possibly gone too.
Mould and stuff can be got ridden of with a professional valet.
Take a phillips with you next time and remove the plastic trim that holds the rear carpet down.
Have a good look at the floor underneth the carpet.
If it looks ugly walk away.
If thats ok, open and check the sunroofs.
How do they look?
Are all the rubbers good?
If the floor and sunroofs look alright, tell him its got loads of faults and you'll take it away for a big discount.
Use the money you saved to get it cleaned and you might have found a bargin.
But check it thoroughly first.
If your not totally happy, Walk.
There's plenty of good examples out there.

A good valeter will remove most smells and unsitely things.
The avarage price (around here) is £110.
Thats for all the carpets, head lining, seats, plastics, engine bay, wash and polish and finished with nice smelling dressings and paper mats.
See if he'll take £3250 for it?

If it's not got sunroofs then it might be the apline lights at the back.

They can leak.

Are the rear doors jammed due to an accident???
I'd offer him £3000 if he got the doors open. Otherwise walk and find a dry one.

WALK

from what your saying he's charging top notch for something thats just not worth it.

its a buyers market. If he is so desperate then he can do better than that or its going to be stinking up his forecourt for a lot longer.

There was a 200tdi localy that was marked up at about £2500 and all the sills where rotten and the rear wings where shot to list just a couple of things
The garage have had it there for at least six months and now its at £600 and being sold as spares or repair.

some of these sales people should be publicly named and shamed.

I've seen far too many vechicles that are only fit for parts or the knackers being sold at stupid prices

sold my M plater with 215000 on the clock for £2000 private...could have fetched more, but at the time disco's with half the mileage were only 500 more...have a look on ebay plenty of bargains to be had...the way you are justifying things - sounds like you have made your mind up to buy and are waiting for someone else to agree...at £4000 you have a pick of cars -seen a local R plater for £4500...Walk unless he'll take £2500, as said before as he is a garage he has to provide a vehicle fit for use...if its been sat for a while WHY? what hidden dangers lurk..if he wont budge on the price AND you want it - tell him to give it a FULL service and change ALL the belts.. if he goes white and starts spluttering WALK..

I think you have made up your mind as well or you are persuading yourself you have found a bargain. I dont think you have found a bargain personaly. I found a bargain last november. A 300tdi M reg auto disco 170k on the clock, 2k spent on repairs over 12 months, chassis is sound, floor needs a bit of work and it just so happened the bolt holding the alternator pulley on came loose but that couldnt have been spotted it was just bad luck but I have the es model (leather seats, air con, cd player, elec windows, elec sunroof etc etc) and it came with £70 seat covers for the front, light guards £70 ish tow bar, blacked out windows and a brand new spare tyre, 10 months mot, 2 months tax all for £2300.

My point is dont persuade yourself on this one. Go and compare it to other discos for that kind of money and see if it REALLY is a bargain. The dorrs not opening sounds dodgy to me but then again it could just be the lock spring.

I would honestly say walk.

Would look at more if I were you. Sold our P Reg v8 auto with 1 year old lpg conversion, 65,000 miles, full service history, no problems at all, interior looked brand new, minor rust (rear door closing panels) on ebay and got £4500 for it. That's not a lot different to what you are thinking of paying. You just need to find someone who has a decent car but needs some hard cash in a hurry, there are plenty of them about!
