Shocks on air suspension
« on: February 13, 2006, 22:33:48 »
I have just read that you can not change the shocks on a air suspension without depressionising the system....... is that true? I thought you could just unbolt them and drop a new one in? It says that it will damage the air bag? It also says if you jack the chasie and then put a axel stand under the axel you can remove it....... can anyone tell me what will happen if i just unbolt it anyway?

shouldnt be a problem to change the shocks as they dont hold the suspension up,

I did mine on my P38, just had it up on a set of ramps, had access to them so used them, unbolted the shocks and put new ones in did not affect the air suspension.

IIRC ther air supension checks the ride height every 6 hours when parked, this might have something to do with it.

as long as you either leave the door open or lock the suspension, no problems.

Being coil sprung never toook much notice of air bag info I am not 100% sure but I seem to remember that you can rip the airbags off the top and bottom plates very easy.  This may be why (just a guess though)

The shocks limit the travel downward of the axle.  If you support the truck by the axle, no worries.  I've changed 'em without taking the wheels off in the driveway.  :)

Yup.  Open the hatch to disable the auto ride height adjustment, also.  Good practice anytime you go to get under the beast.

Done it! I jacked up the Rangey off the axel first then put some axel stands under the chassie lowered it on to these then put another two axel stands under the axel and lowered the axel on to them, did the same for front and back and there was no problems took the wheels off as well to make it easyer, it also cured my stearing wheel shake bonus!

Thanks evry one for your help

Jonny
