Nut Splitters
« on: February 15, 2006, 13:31:11 »
Yo,

I need to remove my sidesteps, and despite several overnight application of WD40 and wirebrushing the threads on the 8x bolts I cant get them to budge, think they have been on since the beginning of time.

I havent got access to a grinder or cutting disc to get the bolt heads off, Im wondering if anyone has any experience of nut splitters and if they would do the job?

For the moment Im leaving the hangers from the chassis in place, its just the steps I need to remove.

Cheers

nut splitters usually work very well and are not expensive either. If you are working under the car there tho, dont forget the eye shields cos they can slip off easily too under the pressure....
If I could only find some mud to play in, I would be as happy as the preverbial pig!!!

You could buy a cheap one for about £5 or so, budget for £10 and you should get some change - it won't be a De Walt one for that money, but for occasional use it would be fine.

Hiya,

Ive been tryiing my big breaking bar on them :) Just got one to start to budge.  Think Ill pop out tomorrow to our local hardware shop and get some new blades for the hacksaw, I should be able to cut the bolt heads off.

Damn Wednesday and here we have that half day closing, the whole village goes to flippin sleep for the afternoon

What are you going to do with the steps when they are removed?

I'm after a left step, I bend it so much that I had to remove it (I gave up with the socket set and ground the bolts off with my angle grinder), is there any chance that spares may be up for grabs here?

And before anyone tells me I'm better off without them.... I know, but with the extra 4" of height it does make it a lot easier to get in on the side with a step!

The drivers side one is rusted and is as flimsy as a paper step.  The passenger side is perfect.  Will take some pics to see if its the same as you want, they are off my 5 door disco.

Mine are the standard fit LR parts (all black with rubberised tread plate and a rubber strip around the outside edge).

Try using a hexagonal socket instead of a 12 sided one, better gripm if you can while you are leaning on the bar with one hand/shoulder, whacl the other end or somewhere youcan get to with a decent sized hammer the jolt might just crack it off

Damo,

If you can't snap an 8mm bolt with a large breaker bar you need to go to the gym

Nut splitters are useful, particularly if you don't want to hacksaw / grind off something like a captive bolt.  However, bear in mind you can buy a small angle grinder for peanuts, which is probably going to see a lot more use.

If you own a Land Rover an angle grinder is an invaluable tool - well worth owning.  As has been mentioned, needn't be expensive.

http://www.screwfix.com/app/sfd/cat/pro.jsp?cId=100368&ts=99855&id=48848 for example - probably not the finest piece of engineering in the world, but it'll do the job and for the sake of 13 quid it's not worth not having one.

 One, I've got 4, one for metal cutting, metal grinding, wire brush and one spare

At the silly prices they are disposable, but they still package a set of spare brushes in them too

Maccess about 4.99 +vat each.

It's throw away society these days. Like Kev I've got half a dozen. If it's a big heavy job use one for a few minutes and then swap to the next one while that one cools down

But very satisfying! Its probably the cause of deep psychological trauma, but imagining the end of the chisel is the face of someone who gets on yer wick/is a PItA/or just deserves a kicking for not contibuting anything usefull to the human race, always helps. Well i find it makes me feel better anyhow. (yes doctor please tighten the buckles on the extended sleeves).

An old trick here for seized nuts n bolts, if you can soak em in coca cola overnight... strange but true

Works great on stuff you can remove from the vehicle first... bit awkward (and more expensive) if you have to sheep dip the whole vehicle....

but not good in summer when all the insects see your vehicle as their equivalent of a huge sugary fly-by macdonalds/burger king etcetc?
