David Bellamy attacks 4x4s
« on: February 18, 2006, 21:12:18 »
Quote

"Off-roaders driven along Britain's ancient byways makes me see red. They help to destroy the peace of our countryside, and in some of the most ecologically delicate areas, paths have been turned into mud baths. Off-roaders may argue that they only use a small percentage of tracks and that walker should live and let live, but the wild bits of Britain should be spared the infernal combustion engine - if the off roaders want to enjoy the countryside they should walk, .............

This is an excerpt from a full page anti 4x4 rant by David Bellamy in the Camping and Caravanning club magazine.

All those who perambulate should also be banned from all areas of wild land Esp the national parks and area's of downland. The use by foot over such areas also causes high amounts of erosion, and looking at the likes of ben nevis, scafel pike, and many over honey pot tourist sites shows just how eroded the nations paths are.

Is that buffoon still at it.

I resigned from the C and CC due to them giving him a platform in their mags a few years ago especially because he was alienating half of the caravanning fraternity that use 4x4 vehicles.

He's a joke. We have some lanes in Notts that have SSI (Sites of Scientific Interest) next to the lane. One goes through the site. 4x4's don't stop there but many a walker can be seen picking the flowers.

Idiots. Great big signs saying PLEASE DO NOT WALK IN THIS AREA OR PICK THE FLOWERS.

Amazing.

He is Britain's most prominent campaigner against the construction of wind farms in undeveloped areas.

He is one of the most well-known people in the UK to reject global warming especially a sustained increase that causes climatic changes. In 2004, he wrote an article in the Daily Mail in which he described the theory of man-made global warming as "poppycock".

David Bellamy's inaccurate and selective figures on glacier shrinkage are a boon to climate change deniers (Guardian)

We'll you can blame the bloke for having an opinion but the editor wants to remind himself who pays his/her wages.

Eeejitts

I often see lesser cars towing caravans which are unsafe, to ailienate 4x4's is a big mistake.

Have emailed the magazine cos am sure what he is promoting and saying is a breach of the DDA (disability discrimination act) as he is trying to say the only way is to walk.

well what a puffed up old cock! lol

is it not a fact that much of the problems in sucj areas are that your typical rambler will walk allong a pre-designated route until he/she comes across a puddle! then walk around it.. leaving his butty rappers, tissues etc in the heather at the side.. a few more do the same.. quite soon there is a large area of rocky unfertile, and generally ruined land where the more humble footpath used to run....

as for 4x4s, do we form a mass divertion to avoid a small muddy hole..u know the answer! although yes, sometimes it can end up been upassable, its this poin that responsible people would report it, even offer to help out, although some would attempt to go round it.

"every action has an equal and opposite reaction" - how true, for soeone to take pleasure means someone else will loose out, but if everyone is considerate and responible and respects each others needs, we can all enjoy whats left of the best side of our country!

It has been said that, given enough time, a million monkeys bashing at a million typewriters would eventually produce the complete works of Shakespeare. Thanks to the Saxo forums, we now know this to be wrong

 we should all write to the editor
this is what i have just sent
Dear editor
We have always enjoyed the country side and have been camping for many years in tents, caravans and motorhomes.
We also use green lanes in 4x4s which we help to keep clear from becoming over grown and open to all by removing dumped vehicles and rubbish ect.
Now my wife has become disabled and cannot walk more than a few steps at best on the flat never mind on rough ground and still wishes to see the country side so we use a landrover for green laning and towing a caravan
Which we can and do use bi-diesel which is very eco friendly
So why do the press persecute the 4x4 owners when the travel industry ie air craft and shipping use ten times the amount of fuel and create more greenhouse gasses than all the 4x4 put together but the press dont tell people to stop flying and holiday at home

Agreed he should try pushing a 20 stone person in a wheelchair up a footpath, that would finish him off

Hmmm,

And Mr. Bellamy has never ever been in a 4x4 in his entire life? Somehow, given his field of work, I find that hard to believe.

Did any body notice in the c and c c magazine that on page before his ranting that the same club have joined up with (start caravanning is this years run in association with land rover and the national caravan council). It is nice to see a balanced viewpoint being over but this does slap you in the face as the dreaded double standards. How can they recommend them on one page and vilify then on the next? You do not think that the c and cc national caravan council might have been given a big discount or maybe a free vehicle to run the promotion. It would be interesting to no what land rover think of them after his ranting.

I know its been a while since thread was used but just had a great email.  I, just like most people on here, sent an email to the magazine venting my fury about the attack on 4x4's etc.......

Well this morning i got a letter from them, they are printing my letter in the April issue of "Forum" and for me troubles they are sending me a nice Regatta fleece!

Of course not being a member of the club i wont recieve a copy of the magazine so if a member has a copy they really dont want please could i have it!  I dont remember much of what i wrote cos i reply to most of these anti 4x4 slurs in most magazines and newspapers!
