« on: February 19, 2006, 14:12:12 »
hi all. might be a bit of a daft question and i think i already know the answer. driving along the motorway today i noticed a rumble sound. when i steer left at 70 it disapears and comes back asoon as im in a straight line again. is this the sign of a wheel bearing on its way?

also whats involved in doing the job as i have the mac coming up soon. could it be something else?

any help or advice most welcome.....thanks guys n girls

Wheel bearing is nice and easy to change, all you need to do is remove the wheel hub, take old ones out, put new ones in, add ample grease, and then refit hubs :D

I,ve cooked two rear wheel bearings. And had to replace the stubaxle on both occasions.I missed the rumbling noises .When you have a teenage daughter the radio is up loud .A lot of things get missed.

If the seat is jammed in, just run an inch of weld around it.  As the weld cools it constricts the race allowing it to come out easier.  Used to do that with motorcycle steering head bearings.

see im not 100% sure it is a bearing.  :?  just been for another run up the motorway. i get the rumble in a straight line and it goes if i steer left. the noise doesnt go until im down below 40 mph ish. normal around town running you cant hear anything, nice and quite. you cant feel anything while driving ie through the steering ect.

im running bfg at's could this be the rumble that maybe ive just never heard before?    and im getting myself at it.

whats the best way to check the bearings to be 100% sure that it is them on the way out?

sorry to be a pain with all the questions and thanks to all who have answered so far

Jack the wheel up off the floor and check for play.
There should be no play at all

The easiest way to check the bearings is to book a table to take the wife out to dinner.  If the bearing is on the way out, it will finally give up on the way to the restuarant! :)

right here goes. just been out and jacked each wheel up. after grabbing the wheel at the 12 , and 6 position and the 9 and 3 position and feeling for play i found that none of the wheels have any. all feels nice.

but on spinning the front right wheel i get a sort sound thats hard to discribe. only as the wheel first turns ie drive take up i get like a small clunk and thats forwards or reverse. no other wheel does it. could this be the cv joint on its way. i dont get any clicking while cornering or anything. even on full lock. well unless i really boot it ( which i never do ).....could this be what is making the rumble sound? and could it last for ages before it goes?

its not the worst one i have heard by a long shot....

the cv should be lubed by the one shot grease or oil in the swivels i believe

Turn the wheel so you can see the brake pad's in the calipers and try rotating the wheel then

thanks guys....just been out and taken out the drain bolt on the front right hub.....    bone dry. hardly a drop came out     .....guess i made a mistake when i belived the last owner when he said all oils have been changed   . i have just filled it with nice sweet smelling ep90....( man that stuff stinks   ). i drained the other side aswell which had a tad more oil in it and refilled it too. seems to have made an instant difference now. the steering is smoother and no more crackes when accelerating.......sounds and feels loads better. going to take her for run down the motorway later but i have the feeling i may have found the source of my mystery rumble  :D  :D  :D

i will let you know abit later.....

thanks again guys  8)
cheers
