Defender Front Axle
« on: February 20, 2006, 21:20:30 »
My lad's defender (1995 300Tdi, 24 spline diff and half shafts), has a cracked front diff pan, we may have the chance of a front axle from a 110 V8, don't know year but suspect it's 10 spline.  I would imagine the axle casting's are the same, but can anyone confirm that for sure.  The plan would be to swap all the existing internals and swivel hubs complete.  Just would be a tad frustrating if we found out it didn't fit at the last minute.  :?

Any help appreciated.

Where's the crack? On the flimsy metal dish that protects the internals? Why not just fix it rather than replace?

Or is it the meaty bit that takes the strain that's bust?

You know you can get weld on pans to fit the axle at modest cost?

If you can repair it could be easier, if its a crack and the main pan is ok (not rusty), you could get it braised up, as a quick fix though you can use a petro patch tank putty on it to cut down the leakage

Not every problem can be solved with duct tape, and it's exactly for those situations we have WD 40

Thanks guys,

The split is in the flimsy metal dish, currently it's enjoying a temporary fix with JB weld, which seems to be holding quite well.  We want to strip the axle anyway to fit new seals in the swivel hubs etc. so thought it might be quicker  to swap the casing.  The other bits that are left would be spoken for as well, as a couple of mates want a pair of swivel hubs and a 10 spline diff and half shafts beween them.

Besides that, I certainly wouldn't trust my welding to be oil tight.   :?
