A week in the life of (artistic licence)

Well as some of you will know I have been looking hard over the last few months for a Discovery. Over the last few weeks I have spent Saturdays viewing Discovery’s all over the North of the country.
On the first weekend I viewed a Discovery in Scotland, 50th anniversary, nice but could not let me have a test drive after travelling 150 + miles. So I drove to Castleford (South Yorkshire?) to view another, this gent wanted to agree a price before I took a test drive, had a good look round and walked.
For the second weekend I kept it local and the vehicles I saw were either very nice and very dear or, cheap and nasty.
For my third outing it was a trip to Rippon (North Yorkshire) to view a nice XS, oops it turned out to be a 3 door, not mentioned in the advert, but it was mainly clean and tidy. Well I had nowt to loose so I told the dealer it was a grand over priced, for a three door. As the dealer didn’t seem to want to deal, I walked.
So I drove to Burnley and phoned to see if I could view a car I thought was in Rossendale, as it tuned out it was in Bingley near Bradford (see a road map and tell me how much time I could have saved if I phoned from Rippon).  So over to Bingley to view another Discovery

Had a good look around http://forums.mud-club.com/viewtopic.php?t=19140&highlight=
Overall clean and tidy
No rust on bulkhead inside doors
Minimal rust inside rear doors, been treated but not bodged and covered
Small patch of corrosion under paint on rear door
Carpets dry
No sunroofs
All windows work
Full service history (bar 2 stamps at around 60thou)
No noticeable oil leaks under engine/transmission
4 good tyres
Starts good
Smooth gear change
20 min test drive and I’m hooked
No slop on the transmission
No steering shake
No black smoke on start-up or while running
I made an offer and we haggled then agreed a price
Left a deposit and drove home smiling

Sunday
Off to pick up my new discovery.
A 7:20 train to catch, butties packed, drinks and a Land Rover mag, it’s off to Bingley.
Typically there is a coach to take people to Preston station, due to essential repairs on the track.  On the train at Preston for a pleasant run to Manchester Piccadilly.  There was a half hour wait at Manchester, then on to Leeds, 15 mins in Leeds then on to Bingley, a total time of 3and ¾ hours.
I must say as a rule I hate train journeys, as they are usually late and unreliable. This time I found the journey pleasant and relaxing with great views over the Pennines.
The seller met me, with my new Land Rover at the train station.  We returned to his house, 5 mins later payment made and I was on my way home.
At this point I realised I was achieving 2 firsts, one this is the longest journey I have ever done in a Land Rover (85 miles) and secondly the first time I had ever been above 40 mph (sorry old series 2 diesel) in a Land Rover.  The journey home was uneventful, so much so I left the motorway a junction early so I could, at least change some gears.

Monday
The wife had organised painting and decorating so the only chance I had to drive the Discovery was to take the little one to nursery, yes it’s a school run

Tuesday
It wouldn’t start; it’s a real Land Rover now. Ok its not the end of the world, the battery seems to be a bit small.  The engine turns over slowly. The previous days it has been slightly warmer and it started straight away. The battery is small with no identification on it, so it looks like a new battery is on the shopping list. Will check the charging system first.

Wednesday
Back to the school run.  Just an observation, there are at least 3 other 4x4 vehicles doing the run to a small nursery.

Thursday
Finally some real off-roading took it twice around Asdas’ car park before finally finding a parking space.

Friday
Took the Land Rover on a day trip to Blackburn Shopping. It started to snow around dinnertime, although all hope of off-roading all the way back to Blackpool quickly disappeared along with the snow.

Saturday
Took the little one to Gullivers World near Warrington ( http://www.gulliversfun.co.uk/ ) and the Land Rover run effortlessly at a steady 70mph.

Sunday
Lets wash the Land Rover, on second thoughts lets not.

There is a small list of jobs to do:
The heater works but does not change direction any ideas please
Battery if it’s below freezing the engine doesn’t turn over fast enough to start the engine.
Interior light needs new bulb
Auxiliary socket for caravan

Save pennies for snorkel, steering guard, and rock sliders/side steps

future events
i have booked this http://forums.mud-club.com/viewtopic.php?t=18946

Try jumping it?, & also try connecting a jump-lead from the block to the battery - terminal (bad earth strap??)

Yes, got to battle with; 2 RR-Sports, Porch Cayenne, D3, Trooper, mixture of D1's& D2's, X5's (nasty B*W's), a XC90, plus all the Volvos & Mercs.
Bad isn't it??
I used to get looked upon as some  kind of Alien 'cause my Discovery was always filthy, now with the 110 no-one parks near me at all

Drop the fuse panel down underneath the steering wheel then crouch down and look up towards the front of the car towards the side of the fan controls and see if the cable is missing off the slider - bit hard to describe in words but once you're looking up into the dash it should be pretty obvious if it has come off

Well done on your new acquisition by the way  :D
