right oh,
how freely should my 300tdi rev, at the minute she seems to run out of steam around 3000rpm. Is this about right?
i don't know when the value clearances were last done and i will attempt it this weekend, is it an easy job? its been suggested that i do it.
also the intercooler probably do with a clean but i'm waiting for warmer weather for that  :D

I'd expect a bit better than that.  Clean it out as you say then get the pump timing checked.

My 300 TDi revs to about 3800-4000 rpm IIRC. I normally use 3000 as a max when the engine's cold!  :wink:

When where the fuel & air filters last changed?
Also check the intercooler pipes for splits & delamination on the inside, this could be sapping the power.
Are you feeling the turbo kicking in at around 1700-2000 RPM? If not then also check the wastegate (on the under side of the exhaust manifold) is connected to the turbo.

Tappet adjustment is easy, one tip though: Chock the rear wheels, jack the front drivers side wheel and put it in first gear (diff lock out). Then you can use the front wheel to turn the engine and it saves trying to get a socket on the cranckshaft pully!!  :D

Oh, and get a new rocker cover gasket just to be safe.

intercooler stripped out and cleaned today, loads of black gunk washed out.  what a difference it makes at low revs  :D . all hoses checked and reconnected,
valve clearance to done tommorrow, hoping this will make performance better
why did my intercooler pipes have traces of oil in though? any ideas please guys? is it anything to worry about.....  :?
i can hear the turbo kicking in nicely now aswell

Have you still got your Exhaust Gas Recirculation (EGR) valve fitted? It's on top of the exhaust manifold and has a pipe that joins into the top intercooler pipe.
If so, that's maybe where all/some of the oil is coming from. You can blank this off with a blanking plate that costs about £2 from a Land Rover dealer. Like this one I found on Ebay.  :wink:

i assume the fuel filter was changed in the full service i paid for in november..
it gives a puff of smoke on start up from cold but nothing else, hopefully the weather will hold tommorrow as i dont have the luxury or a garage  just my drive  :cry:

The only other places I can think it could be coming from is the turbo oil seals or the breather pipe that cames from the rocker cover into the air intake pipe just to the rear of the air filter. Try removing and cleaning the breather filter, bolted onto the drivers side (RHD) of the rocker cover. It's a round black plastic thing with a pipe going into the bottom and another pipe going out of the rear and going round the back of the engine.

I was only being curious about the oil and EGR valve ole chap!

I didnt say an old fuel filter...

I said had it been changed recently.

Same here about the fuel filter, in case there was something I didn't know that could come in handy later. Didn't mean anything by it but I could have worded it differently.  :wink:
 
Your question did make me think about it a little deeper and realise that I was talking cr@p about EGR and that the more likely that the cause was the breathers.  
Blanking the EGR will reduce the nasty oily deposits in the intake manifold, not the intercooler, because you don't have any un-burnt fuel and exhaust fumes being pumped through there any more.  :D

budgie that thought had occured to me. thanks  :wink: i did have a problem from the breather pipes about two months ago, guessing that the stuff in there was left over and not fresh
sorted the valve clearances today, quite a way out and what an easy job, and it sounds less like a tractor now. took me an hour nice and slowly and enjoying the sunshine and too think the garage wanted an £190  :shock:
couple that with the intercooler clean loads more torque and certainly pulls better at low speed.
fuel filters are also to be done to make sure, thanks for all the tips so far guys
but..... and there always is, i think my viscous fan coupling is caput, seen better days  :(
the search is on for a replacement me thinks, also found the source of my coolant loss the legendry p gasket.  :evil:
why is there never any light at the end of the tunnel  :?  :lol:
ah the joy of owning a green oval  :wink:

Glad you got the valves done, it does make quite a difference if they've not been do in a while doesn't it!!  :D
