its been making lots of funny noises recently and I got under and found the UJ on the front prop well worn, so I've been meaning to replace it for weeks, well, yesterday it decided it had had enough and removed itself!!
I got a whole new salvaged propshaft for less than I'd had have to have paid for replacing of the bearings etc so I fitted that last night.
Some questions arose whilst fitting it....
-on my old propshaft I was able to easily disconnect the two ends apart exposing the splined joint in the middle, the new one doesn't seem to extend more than a few inches. Is this cos the "new" one is crap or was the old one crap and wasn't suppossed to extend that much?
-On the front of the prop, connecting to the front diff. The bolt heads are on teh prop side, with the nuts connecting from the diff side, but on the rear, where the prop connects to the transfer box, the nuts are on the prop side and the bolt heads are on the other side. This means the bolts cannot be removed becuse they are "trapped" by the mounting plate of the transfer box.
eg:
The bolt head is trapped by plate c which appears to be bolted on by a great big nut (b) which you can see when the prop is off. I didn't want to muck about with it though without knowing what else it was holding!!
I'd like to replace these bolts cos they're getting a bit old but is si t safe to remove plate c?
