Alternator probs

i posted recently that my battery was a bit small for the job
well before going to buy a new batteryi checked the charging system
the charge light goes out as it should
put a current indicator on the back of the alt and it indicated there was some but not a lot of current
put current indicator near the battery and there was no current
checked the battery with the volt meter it registered 12.9 v
at 2000 revs it reg 12.85 v
so it looks like a new alt
is there anything i can do to repair it or is it a new unit
anybody got a good 2nd hand unit for sale to fit 300 tdi, please PM me

If the battery is full charged then the alternator is not going to produce much current anyway, its the way there designed to work. Try testing the current when you've got all the lights, fans, electrics turned on, the alternator should produce more current to deal with the increased demand.

The best thing i find for trouble some alternators is excahnge for a recon unit. you could try repairing it your self, but trying to get just one or two parts can be tricky and from experiance some alteranto designs can be right swines to get back together.

the battery was not fully charged as i had just jump started it
will be looking itno it a bit more when weather warms up a bit

Not knowing which, there are other alternators that fit the 300, so if somebody can tell you, you can look further afield than land rover, and more than likely save some money

The story so far
I took the battery off on saturday dinner time
put it on charge for about 5 hours. (i know thats not long enough to fully charge a battery) hoped that it would start for a few days
put it back on for a quick journey
next morning it was flatter than ever
jump started it and drove to Manchester  :lol:
(i have got recovery just in case)
came out after an afternoon at Manchester United Football ground
and it started :roll:
it couldnt start if the alt wasnt charging :oops:
it didnt show it was charging when i checked it on sat morning :?
this morning got in it and it started (though it was slow to turn over) :?  :?  :?  :?

If the charging light goes off then maybe the battery itself is dead.
They are known to just die if left unused in cold weather.

I would say the battery is on its way to the battery graveyard.

Mine was turning over very slowly but would start beginning of Dec,  put a new Varta on it and didnt have any problems.

Charged up the old Disco one and put in the caravan as we were away for a weekend recently, and it lasted about 2 hours (just lights and waterpump) before we were in darkness.  :shock:
