ok to cut a long story short how do I deal with a rounded off bolt on the bottom of my sump?
I reckon the lads in Solihull made this one on a Friday afternoon out of some especially soft metal..

I'm considering filing it down so I can get a smaller spanner on it.. bad idea?

Is it positioned so that you can hacksaw/grind a screw-driver slot into it?

Thanks, BTM. could be enough depth.... might be worth a 'bash'  :)

I did also think about using my favourite glue "super steel" to fix a socket onto it.

Think I might have a cuppa and a think. while nursing bruised nuckles from slipping spanners.

if your struggling get down to your local friendly engineering shop and get them to weld a peice of flat bar onto it use it as a handle to turn the nut, nuts gonna need replacing once its out anyway.

Try hammering a hexagonal socket onto it smaller than the bolt, or if you can get a narrow chisel down the side of the nut try to split it, then renew the stud as well

another way is to arrange for the offending bolt to have a meeting with an angle grinder. Between them they can discuss the issue.

Thanks for the suggestions   :)

It's the drain plug bolt on the sump so I'll resist the urge to attack it too ferociuosly (sp?) although tempting!

As I'm going to have to replace the bolt anyway, where can I get one of the special bolts that make changing the oil easier - well next time at least... anyone used one before?

thanks for all the help/advice

after splitting a socket I finally found success by hammering a 5/8" spanner onto what was left of the 17mm bolt head  :wink:

anyone put one on a TD5?  Only reason I ask is that the drain is on the bottom of the sump, unlike the 200TDi Disco which was on the side IIRC. How easy are they to snap off?    :shock:

I was thinking exactly the same question, for the V8, where the drain is at the side but very low.

Count yourself lucky you don't have a Disco 2 axle - the fill plugs are made of plastic, so you try to get one off and they just disintegrate.  Whoever at LR specified a plastic fill plug needs a good kicking!  I spent an hour at the side of the road in Scotland trying to get the bloody thing off when all the oil peed out the breather tube.
