Front axle whining

The front axle on my classic has developed a whineing nosie. The njose happens when the vehicel is moving and on reasonably tight steering lock (about half lock onwards). Could this the diff trying to tell me something :(  or could it be something else?

There is no noise when travelling in a straight line or when the vehicle is stationary.

Is the whinning nosie typical for a diff thats about to go bang or can CV joint whinne as well?

i would check your wheel bearings 1st

are you sure its coming from the front axle and not the transfer box? have you got a BW with viscous coupling as if this has seized it will cause wind up which can make diffs whine

It sounds like its comming from the front axle, but then again.

No viscous coupling that i know of, its an 87 with manual diff lock.

i know what im about to say may sound a little daft. i had the same on my disco. well thats how it started. i checked all 4 wheel bearings and they were all fine. went on to check all the other bits n pieces and couldnt find anything wrong. we went up to cambridge the weekend just gone and the wine was still there so put it down to diff. when we got there i checked the wheels for play again and all was well.

but on the M3 on the way home it got worse so stopped. on checking the heat on the hubs i found that they were a little warm. so i did the wheel check again and i had loads of play in both. i limped her home. next day i had the bearings out to find that both inner bearings on the front had collapsed. they were obviously the cause of the wine. new bearings now fitted and sounding quite again  :wink:  hth
