Well it has begun indeed :( it means i will be giving me motability car back at the end of this contract and using the free RFL certificate for me disco :(

Does anyone know what the rough emmissions are for each engine?  I.e. each of the v8's, the mpi, 200tdi, 300tdi and td5?

Surely they can only put this extra tax on the new cars?  Because the system currently in use works off emissions rather than engine size (which is used for any cars before such-and-such a date)

The RAC should concerntrate on fixing vehicle rather than stirring up hype. Good job I'm not with them any more as it would be another excuse to dump them

Is the tax going on emmissions, engine size or whether a vehicle has more than one drive axle?   If the chancellor singles out 4x4 drivers, calling them gas-guzzlers and leaves the drivers of luxury and sports cars (of which sales have also increase) then he is guilty of breaching discrimination policies

as i understand it laws cannot be applied retrospectively,(ie applied to vehicles in existance) i assume that this is going to be for NEW vehicles only.. but will it include the new jag x type? or audi quattros?
wonder if its time to lobby for the re-introduction of tex exempt status???
big fanfare when it was introduced..then 18 months later dropped without so much as a single explanation!!!
thank god my S3 is tax exempt!!

It also doesn't include many 4x4's including manual gearbox Diesel Discovery 3s. Emission data on vehicles that are covered by the current banding system can be found at http://www.vcacarfueldata.org.uk/

The original proposal from the RAC Foundation is at http://www.racfoundation.org/index.php?option=com_content&task=view&id=342&Itemid=35 . I can see no mention of 4x4 vehicles there. Neither can I see anything in the quote of what the minister said, when this was reported just days ago (full marks to the times for recycling) http://driving.timesonline.co.uk/article/0,,22749-2060433,00.html . Perhaps the 4x4 spin has been chosen by the times as it makes a better headline than "Budget could hold a shock for Vauxhall Vectra drivers"

At work we carry out a RPC test (Reduced Pollution Certificate) where owners of LGV's that pass this emissions test can make savings on exercise duty. Maybe all vehicles should have this test rather than just having to meet a minimum standard.

Its another £30 over what is paid at the moment. That is not going to put anyone off. It is designed to placate the antis and raise the extra tax that the goverment is going to lose from excise duty elsewhere.

Its all those sad posh mums in thier 4x4's causing all this, do they actually buy a 4x4 for a reason, or do they do it to show off and produce more pollution because they could just use a more efficient car.

It only mentions emissions, not 4x4 users in particular.
So all the big cars/suvs/4x4s will be targetted.

Another question on implementation of such data, is where the heck would they get that value from anyway?

Does it become part of the MOT test, that would then determine your next road TAX cost?  as each car is different based on the components it has fitted.

I cant see a way it could be implemented otherwise.

i don't see how the mot center could dictate what tax you pay.

I should imagine it will be all new cars that will be afected.

They could record your emmissions results which could be used to then calculate your tax band.

The banded duty rates only apply to vehicles registered on or after 1/3/01, older vehicles are subject to duty according to engine size as shown here.

This proposal is just to add another band for newer vehicles. The testing method for these is laid down in a european directive, details here.

Now I have no evidence to back this up, but would not be surprised that if a new higher band is introduced, the duty rate on older vehicles will be set at the same level as for this upper band.

Hi,

if this relates to vehicles registered after 1/3/01, where do i stand?

my disco is a 99 series II, but as i brought it with me when i returned from Oz, it was first registered in the uk in dec 2004 - but it has an S reg plate cos it is a 99 vehicle.

so, how is it counted?

Dunno but it's bound to be cheaper than the air fair / petrol from Oz!

I'd guess it would reply on date of manufacture rather than registration, same line as tax exemption does for older tax exempt landies.

Well smoking whilst driving should be banned just like mobile phones.

After all, you have one hand on the wheel and one holding your smoke to your gob

Whats the difference from that to holding a phone to your ear?

You're right. I already spend about £3000 a year on diesel (most of which is already TAX), why should I worry about another £35 (1% of my fuel bill)?
