Squeaks!
« on: March 09, 2006, 10:11:29 »
Seem to have developed a squeak on my discovery. Have had a quick look at the obvious things but won't be going underneath until the weekend!
Seems to be a dry type of squeak like you get from a loose exhaust but more so. My gut reaction is the fron UJ on the prop. Reason is, it sounds like it is coming from the front and speeds up as the revs do when under strain. Also, whole car seems slightly more juddery. I'm tempted to blame the recent salted roads for seeing it off.

Anyone else had similar? Any other opinions?!!

Squeeks from U/J's will increase with road speed, squeeks from the belt tentioner will increase with engine speed, no matter what gear you're in.  May help to narrow it down a little.

Squeaks from passengers increase with angle of ascent, and decrease to a whine when outside pushing

I too had a squeak on my 300Tdi, changed the serpentine tensioner bearing and the squeak remained. It turned out to be the front prop front UJ, completely broken up and objecting loudly under load, that'll teach me to buy cheap [PooPoo] Taiwanese UJ's they only lasted 15,000 miles! Just fitted a set of GKN's, feel far more confident now!
Good luck with the prop.........

Update.....................

Was a UJ (rear of front prop). Had pretty well broken up internally. Sorted now so a much smoother ride.  :D
