Disco Gearbox in a Defender? LT77 or R380?
« on: March 12, 2006, 22:12:11 »
Is it possible to put either a Disco LT77 and R380 gearbox in a Defender? My gearbox knowledge is very limited and so this maybe a very stupid question, however have been wondering about it all week.  Its just that my gearbox is on its last legs and i would like something a little more....smooth. cheers all,
Rob

you can fit it but need to either rebuild it with defender bits or take the jigsaw to the seat box as the gearstick sits further back on a disco

yes you can fit a disco lt77 in a 90 because i fitted one into my defender but you need the knowlage to do it and be able to weld
 BUT.... the down sides

1. the  gear stick will sit where the middle seat is.....just behind the seatbox re-inforcing...the leading edge

2. the engine will sit further forward...5 inches further forward.... is entirely possable just loose the viscous....add an electric depending on engine...my 200disco in the defender can still use its viscous but its like a paddle wheel in water  :P

3.  you will need to fabricate two new engine mounts and weld them to the chassis

4. obviously you will need to mod the exhaust...but that was the whole purpose to me !

all the rest is obvious

it took me 2 days ( 9 hours a day ) to do start to running up the local dual carrage way

if you need any more help just pm me, have helped a fellow mc member out with fitting a lt77 in a 90 with a nissan sd33 engine !

if i was scratch building a racer id have a disco box straight away simply for the fact it makes the gear stick in a much more comfortable postion,BUT for a road motor i wouldnt bother & just fit a defender box as there isnt any actual benefit in fitting a disco box mechanicals wise IMO

but why do you want to go through all that hassle, me and redlinemike have just been discussing it on msn and basicaly it isnt worth it unless you doing it for a reason....i did it for a reason...i was killing the engine with exhaust gasses not escaping quick enough and to get an advantage offroading of quicker gearchages......as you can find the gears now
dont get me wrong its possable..anything is possable in a land rover but it isnt worth it for what you want

it realy isnt worth it unless your doing it to get an edge other others !

sorry to hijack, but is it possible to fit an R380 defender box onto an early 200tdi which would normally have the LT77 box?

I'm thinking about it as my gearbox is on it's last legs (jumps out of reverse all the time) and is notchy etc (well just like a land rover LT77 really) just I don't want to be withotu the day it goes.

Can it be bolted straight onto the bell housing and the transfer box as is?

Finally, is there any benefit to doing it?

Matthew

the benefit is you wont get reverse instead of 1st when the reverse lock gets warn lol, need a few answers first tho........... what engine is it going to be mated to 200tdi....300tdi, if 300 then yes....if 200 then no because the mainshaft is longer   just easier to fit another lt77

o and if it is a defender that you are fitting it to which i am not sure on as you havent stated unless i am being blinde and missed it lol then it will push the engine 5 inches forward as the bellhousing is longer than a defender lt77 bellhousing, so the engine will be sitting where a 300tdi sits

R380 defender box onto a defender 200tdi in a defender 90...

I know the lt77 disco shaft is longer than a defender lt77, but wasn't sure when it came for defender to defender lt77 to R380.

no it puts the gearbox 5 inches further back, thus the whole point of fitting one to a defender so its closer to hand
