Thermostat Temperature 200tdi

Hi all.
My disco has been running cold recently so i have decided to buy a new stat and fit it at the weekend.
im a little worried though as the Haynes manual says it should have an opening temp of 82 deg and the stat i have been given says 89 deg.
Am i being to picky or should i take it back and ask for a 82 deg one??
oh, the part number was QTH117K equiv MTO117K made by QH, is this the right one?
Any advice as i want to get it right.

I'm not sure whether you would get away with a 87 degree thermostat. Have a look at what temperature the last one was rated at.
However, typicaly when a stat fails, they fail shut, causing the water to boil, which can lead to a spectaculare and worrying fountain of water out from the pressure cap.
The way to test a suspect thermostst is to stick it in a sauce pan of water over the stove with a thermometer in the water near the thermostst, it should start to open around the stated temperature, if it doesn't then chuck it.

i was just going to replace it anyway as its not expensive, might not even have one in as its never got hot, even when laning all day the guage is at most on the first quarter and the heater is never that hot.
just wondering if 7 deg will make much difference?
dont want it getting to hot

ay-up Ive got a 200 and I have the 89 degree thermostat in mine, the gauge sits just below half and never moves and the heater is toasty!!! after about 2-3 miles,it doesnt overheat.....the thermostat you have bought is a 300tdi one but it will fit and run ok..........no doubt someone will correct me but the proof of the pudding is in the eating.

i have found out from a mate at landrover that the 200 should have a 88deg stat so i have fitted the one i bought.
even now it wont get hot, its got a new rad, viscous fan and now stat??
the temp will go up to 1/3 if i really open her up on a long hill but when in traffic or moving slower it goes back to zero.
the heater in the car does work but i would'nt say hot.
Maybe its ok, i know diesels do run colder than petrol and id rather it run cold than hot

does the heater blow hot air out when the gauge is on a third? my gauge goes down when in slow moving traffic but then again I have binned the viscous fan and put a kenlowe in,so it might be that its not running hot enough in traffic,or there could be crap in the heater matrix, have you tried flushing it out really well?

If your heater isnt blowing hot air, then the most likely culprit is the heater matrix. Its only the equivalent of a small radiator, and if you have had to replace the rad chances are the heater matrix needs doing too.
Im led to believe its a big job, but i wudnt know as my disco had a new one fitted just before i got it.
It may just need a clean out as they do tend to get blocked up over time.
Have you thought that your gauge isnt reliable? i never trust electric gauges, if your really worried invest in a capilary temperature gauge, there less than 20quid, and far more reliable than an electric one.
You will find with the cold weather that the engine wont get that hot anyway, if it does expect big problems when the summer arrives.

same with mine
changed stat to 88 deg
runs just below half on the temp gauge
heater works ok after about ten mins driving
but i cant belive that it would have been that poor when
it left the factory
and what do they do in places like canada in the winter
i sure they wouldnt put up with a poor heater in their winter conditions
there must be an answer but i dont know it
i did have a lot of fords in the past and used to put 92 deg stat in
so to get a good heater
dont know if you can still get them
or if they could be fitted
does anyone know ?

Try flushing out the matrix, if that doesnt work then maybe its time for a new one??
IMO forget changing the stat for a higher temperature, look for the cause of the problem, instead of finding a way around it.

Running an 88degree stat should be enough to kick out a decent amount of heat, provided the heater matrix is working correctly, at the end of the day, it is only a heat exchanger, and they do become less efficent as they sludge up over time, exactly the same as radiators do.
If you would like to make your engine run hotter then go for a hotter stat, i believe they are available still.
Personally, i wouldnt want my diesel running over 90 degrees, specially a turbo'd engine.

I will let you know next week.
My disco had a brand new matrix fitted approx 6 months ago.
I am just finishing fitting the LD28T so will see how well it works on the diesel, was working well with the v8 when i removed it.

the heater in my 200 disco is brilliant. i have to turn it down alot to make it more bearable.yup its that good. i had to change my heater motor not that long ago and believe me when i say this " if i can anyone can ". its a dash out job to change the matrix but its the same to do the motor aswell. i had the same problem as you when i changed the motor. the gauge wouldnt rise very far at all. even booting her up a long hill it still didnt get very warm. so i replaced my thermostate with a new 88deg one. it was better but not brilliant. so i disconnected the pipes under the bonnet to the heater matrix and pushed the hose on the outlet. i let it back flush for about an hour. and then did it the other way.
you wouldnt believe the difference. give it a try and let us know how it goes. no harm in trying
