Local Market gone!!
« on: May 28, 2004, 22:53:33 »
Our local market burned or was burned down the other day. It was a really great typical market hall, good stuff, good people, now just scrap.... shame that someone or something has to have such an effect on the quantity of people around here.

There was one butcher, he has worked there for 72 (YES 72) years, being 84 yrs old now........ and was still on the stall days ago

Things will never be the same :(

Just wanted to share this with you.........

and another market bites the dust..

they'll probably rebuilt it though, but it'll be as one of those really nice french style markets with high pitch prices and stalls that sell crap nobody wants...  then it'll get closed down because nobody goes there....

look on the brightside, they get to waste a couple of million quid of taxpayers money to end up with a pointless eyesore :(  Just like they did in bolton, burnley, todmordon, bacup......

Whatever happens, it is b***dy sad...... :(

The shell appears to be still upright and looks well from a distance. From outside looking in, it perhaps could be saved a little to try and keep some character.

They are trying to link the fire into a previous nights fire at a bride shop on the other side of town.............

curious..

you dont think its arson do you?

besides

have they said what the cause of the fire is yet?

AND

if the shell is still standing, they may rebuild it

i know its not in the same context but didnt some abbey burn down a few years ago and got rebuilt (one the royals use or something?)

they dont know yet, but rumours being rumours, the fire at the bride shop less than 24 hrs before... I have lived in Ashton for over 20 yrs now and NEVER have we had TWO big fires in less than 24 hrs!!!

There were 90 firefighters on the scene and engines from as far away as Whitfield!! Our own service had been sent home that day for refusing to use some new kit.....

Ironic.... or not..... I am open minded, just hopeful they rebuild at least keeping the outer shell. I know the character wont be there for a long time, but at least some will remain.

The same thing has happened in Leeds a couple of time to the market, but it's risen like the proverbial Phoenix.

The Victorian section is the lasrgest single market building in Europe & beautiful inside (some pics on my 'WebShots' - Architecture & Buildings ofLeeds)

It was widely thought that Leeds Council would pull it down entirely, but it was rebuillt (as was the Corn Exchange)

Apparently they are looking for donations to rebuild. They need around £1m for the opportunity.

Anyone know of someone who has this kind of money spare :)

They are leaving buckets fo rthe donation from the public in libraries and similar places....... I wont hold my breath for my next purchase of salmon then!!!
