To gauge tyre sizes, have a look HERE. If you're thinking about doing a lift then I'd do that first and then look at the tyres. If you do it the other way then you could end up not liking the look of it cos the tyre look too small, plus you can better gauge how much room you have to play with.

Have a good read through some of the other threads about this subject and make sure you understand what else is affected when you lift the motor, things like the steering feeling loose, proshaft vibrations, anti-roll bars needing to be spaced to match the lift and longer brake lines etc etc.

Take a look here to see what 245/75R16's look like on steel modulars.

I have not got my 2" lift on yet, so does take a bit of extra cutting (see photos) to clear the rear arches because of the extra offset over standard LR wheels. The good news is the extra offset means not having to alter the lock stops so no loss of turning circle.

245/75's will fit on standard wheels with very little cutting (not even noticable - see the link in Budgie's post) and a minor tweek to the steering stops.

With a lift you have other options but remember the bigger you go, the higher the gearing. the 245/75's add 6% which doesn't really affect my V8 Auto but does make it a bit sluggish on pull away and off road descents in first low are a bit more er... interesting! But this amount can be lived with.

The change from 235/70 Pirelli Scorpion ST to the 245/75 BFG Mud Terrains gave me at least 1.5" of extra clearance under the diffs (on paper the difference is 0.7" but the tread blocks are of course much taller).

As an aside, I put the Scorpions back on yesterday as I'm going down to Dorset next weekend with no off roading to speak of. A quick drive around the block makes the old girl feel like a sports car! The acceleration seems really quick and the V8 was no slouch on the MT's  :D  :D  :D

I had new rears fitted on Saturday.  I have stuck with 235/70 R16 Michelin road tyres for now as I don't go off-road too much.  Anyway, I got some prices for all terrains (BFG, General AT2 and so on) in standard and non-standard sizes.  Chap was very clear that I shouldn't fit larger diameter tyres because, "You'll ruin your diffs and wind your transmission up."

I have never heard of your diffs being affected by larger tyres before.  I understand the gearing implications and speedo changes but not knackering your transmission.  I wanted larger tyres for next Summer when I take to the old girl to drive across Iceland and I want all the ground clearance I can get...

Bit of a red herring. Yes larger tyres do effect your gearing and will put more strain on your transmission(it has to work harder) but he's the one doing the 'wind-up'
You can get 35's in with a 2 inch lift...but you need 4 inch offset wheels and arch extensions...wouldnt recommend it on stock gearing either.
Fit the lift first then decide...31's are a good size ...make small children smile when they see you!!!LOL

Well here are my 235/85/R16 BFG Mud Terrains on a disco with a 2" Lift.

Haven't done any off-roading with them yet as we havent finished (As you can probably see.) but hopefully it wont be a problem or wind up the trans!

Very nice!

If larger tyres affect accelaration, do you gain on top end I wonder?

My 2" lift will be fitted in the next month...Can't wait.

Brother Ted, I see you have lots of room in front of your rad for a nice fat intercooler.  Well worth the investment.  Had mine 2 years now and loved every minute.  Great accelaration (for a Disco tdi!) and doesn't slow down going up hills like a standard one....

Hi simon,

We've just flushed out the original intercooler for now with some paint thinners, but I think a big one will be well worth the investment in the future - the photo there is about a month old, it looks like this now.

Obviously its quite heavy, got rock/tree sliders, 2" lift, scorpion front and rear bumper, super winch EPi9, this seems to affect top end speed (ie, it maxes out at 80) not sure if this is a problem or just cos its so heavy, also not sure if the wheels make a big difference to the speedo.

Where did you get your intercooler? i hear you can get some pretty good 2nd hand ones, someone mentioned volvo and citroen ones i think.

If you've still got the standard transfer box, diffs & speedo gear then you may want to check your speed with a GPS, you may be going slower that you think!!

Is it quite hard to pull away, slows when it sees a hill and struggles to do 30mph in 4th gear? If so then it's the tyres effecting the overall gearing of the vehicle rather than the extra equipment you've put on it.

I ended up putting a 1.44:1 ratio transfer box from a TD5 Defender in mine when I fitted the 33x12.5x15's, although this only brings the high ratio back to about normal, low range remains the same and is a little over geared on hills. Makes you pay attention though!  :D

And Simon, your man is talking a load of cr@p, the only way to wind up the transmission is to leave the centre difflock engauged while driving on the road! I've had the 33" tyres on the Disco for nearly two years now and not suffered any problems.

Brother Ted, I got my intercooler from the fellas at Allisport.  Cracking bunch, mad as sticks too!

I think I will take the plunge and get taller tyres next year then.  I did think the fella was talking nonsense when he mentioned wind up and all that, but I didn't argue as he had my truck on the ramps at the time...

I would recommend them any day of the week for tyre prices and service, but maybe not on 4x4 tyre choice advice...

If you are fitting a different size, well rolling radius actually then you have to swap all 4 tyres, I believe you swaped only 2.  You could go from 205 to 235/70 without problems.

When I chose my lift I went for a 2" so I could put bigger tyres on it. I also went for 4" extra travel shocks for more droop. When I was checking out tyres I was told 245/75R16 is about the largest you can go without trimming not not really sure about this.

I now have 31.10.50R15 and have needed to trim the arches.

I have 265/75x16,s fitted with a 1" lift on standard disco steels, i,ve had to trim the rear arches slightly just to stop the occasional catch on the rear edge and adjust the steering stops

Tim and I both have BFG MT 235/85 and have noticed our speddos read slow (obviously) but his GPS says they are spot on, so must have been reading fast.  Anyway, it adds about 10% and with the B-W transfer box I struggle to stay in 5th, with the trailer on, forget it.

Given how fast they are wearing I need to use my 235/70s a bit more often
