So, I've just spent a few hours trying to convince my new speedo cable that it wants to go up through the myriad of small holes inside the dashboard.  After all, my old one looked a bit like this at the transfer box end:



Old one on the right, bit that should be sticking out of the end of the old one at the top.

However, it's still not playing ball.  I know for a fact that:

1. The speedo works.  I jammed a screwdriver in the back and spun it round for a bit, and the needle moved.
2. The new cable works.  If I turn one end by hand, the other end turns.

So, by a process of elimination, this has to be a problem with the drive out of the transfer box?  Am I correct?

What's the remedy for that?  New transfer box?  It's got a great leak going on at the moment anyway, so that may not be such a bad idea, but I'd rather not.

Try turning the speego cable from the t box end and see if it works. Then see if the t box is turning the "transducer" ( think that's what it's called).

That'll help you to find out where the problem lies.

The "transducer" does come out and can be replaced if the drive gear hasn't been damaged.

I had the similar problem some years ago on one of my old cars. It turned out to be the cable which was not quite set in the corredct place and was causing too much of a resistance in the sheathing. I had to make sure it was in a nice smooth bend etc before it wnated to work.

Dont know if this is the case for yours, but worth a try before replacing the Xfer box....
If I could only find some mud to play in, I would be as happy as the preverbial pig!!!

Do you mean that there's an actual replaceable bit of the transfer box?  I've heard tell from another source that there may be such a thing in existance, although the Haynes Book of Lies is very brief on anything to do with gear or transfer boxes.

How would I tell if it's being turned?  The only way that immediately springs to mind is to try and support myself off the chassis and try and and get a peek into it as someone else drives the vehicle, whilst trying to avoid burning myself on the exhaust, getting any body parts caught in the prop shaft, or getting run over!  Maybe not an idea solution!

A possibility, but from what I can recall (it's wet out there right now; I'm not going out to look), it's taking a fairly uncomplicated route.  It's going up from the transfer box and over the bell housing in a rather nice curve, anyway.

Stick it on axle stands and turn the wheels.
(Make sure it's safe)
If my memory serves me right there's just one bolt that holds the unit on to the transfer box.
