The cambelt operates the cam, which opens and closes the valves.....

If it breakes it can leave a valve 'open', and if the engine is still running (being turned by the gearbox), the piston head can 'clout' the valve and put it through the head and even the bonnet if hit hard enough.

Is that enough damage to put you off breaking one?

I can't think of any  :?

If you break other belts there will be no damage, you would just loose something such as power steering, or the alternator, or air-con*

But a CAMbelt I would have thought was disasterous on any vehicle.

Some engines have a recess in the piston where a valve would never make contact with the piston.

If it saves a partial strip down or a complete engine, I think you may find its worth it.
If you dont know when it was last done, better to be same than bang, clatter

Cam belt failure is usually terminal for the valve and rocker gear and can also cause extensive damage to the head and pistons.

No excuses for not changing the belt - if goes and you have replacement to hand you can quite rightly call yourself a prat.

Get it done and don't be lazy or you deserve it to fail.

Rest assured it will wreck your top end sooner or later.
