Lack of Bumper.
« on: March 24, 2006, 19:08:45 »
My local Plod (who just happens to live next door) has told me that my Suzuki Samurai will not pass the MOT test as I no longer have the original front bumper fitted. It's been removed and bull bars fitted in it's place.

The original bumper would have sat behind the bull bars anyway so I can't see that it makes any difference whether the bumper is there or not.

Anybody else had any problems with this at the MOT test?

My hybrid has no front bumper either and has a bull bar instead, it passed the SVA test and passed the past 3 MOT's since too.

It may be a question of sticky out bits rather than the bull bar it's self, i do know when i cut down the bumper on the LWT i spoke to the then local plod shop and they told me i had to paint it yellow and 'smooth' any sharp edges.

Hope this is of use, no doubt someone will be along to correct me but still, telling it how it is for me personally.

:D provided there is no jagged edge then it will pass a mot
a missing bumper is not in the mot criteria
the only fail on body work is crackes or corrosion within 30cm of seatbelt mounts and jagged edges which might harm pedestrians

One thing may not help, is if the sidelights or indicators are in the bumper  , but otherwise as said above should be no probs, protruding and sharp bits are the main points

Not every problem can be solved with duct tape, and it's exactly for those situations we have WD 40

Sidelights & indicators have been repositioned on brackets on the bull bar. I"ve used the standard mountings for the bull bar so I think I should be OK. Plod nextdoor is a fairly nice bloke but he sticks his nose in things that don't concern him sometimes.

On the whole I have found your average cop just isn't that hot on what is and what is not legal.

Few years ago me and Bob got pulled leaving a bike rally and the bike cop went over Bob's chop with a supposed 'fine tooth comb' it certainly took him half an hour in bl***y cold damp weather.

He gave Bob a rectification notice for faulty front forks, as he reckoned the oil seals had gone and there was far too much play in them which was a load of nonsense.

He failed to spot - the exhaust held together by a trent beer can and a couple of jubiliee clips, the missing horn (it fell off!), the unsecured seat, and the petrol tank tied on with a bit of electrical wire.

He ignored my bike cos it was shiny and new looking.

We had the bike mot'd the day after (after fixing the genuine faults we new about) and I complained to Notts constabulary - they apologised and accepted a copy of the MOT instead of the stamped rectification notice.
