TATA 4x4 in Great Britain, Rad, Bad or Sad

We don't have TATA in the States.  I remember a TATA Gurkha in the Eastgate Mall in Inverness on display.  It looked ok.  But I see that there is no section for them here.  Hmmm.  Also see that there is no section for Ford, Hmmm.  Maverick not Off-road worthy?  Do they even still sell the Maverick there?  

Speaking of Maverick, we only had it as a car in the seventies.  You don't get the Ford Escape 4x4 do you?

Do back to TATA or Mahindra, are they still there?  What are they worth?

That surprises me about Ford.  The number one selling vehicle in the United States for decades has been Ford pick-up trucks and at least half of them must be 4x4.

Current state of 4x4s in the US seems to be lots of Jeeps, and move to powerful diesel trucks.  Also there is a bunch of tubed framed rock crawlers as well, powered by any engine you can imagine.

The TATAs were aimed at the budget SUV market here and many only had 2WD. :?
I always fancied one with Mercedes 190 cosworth running gear ! :shock:
The styling was based on 190 merc cab shape. The newer ones are better equiped but still have poor peugeot engines.
Had good review in 4x4mag a couple of years ago. :)

Brother in law has a Tata Loadbeta he uses in his landscape gardening business. Running wise he has little problem with it.

Cost wise they are really cheap 2nd hand (I have seen double cabs with less than 35K go for £1800)  but a lot of them are only 2wd as mentioned.

He has used it off road but the main problem he found was the ground clearence isn't that great.

I wouldnt buy one myself unless it was dirt cheap and I needed a plaything to wreck for a week or 2

tata safari was and is a budget 4x4 that has all the toys .. and I think they were / are about £15k new.. seriously thought about one, then came to my senses and brought a disco... even considered a ssanyong musso, but they didnt have a 7 seat conversion at the time..

Someone at the top of my Village used to have a TATA pickup, kind of looked like an Early 90's Mercades from the front.

They've never sold well over here, and with the choice I can't really blame them, The guy who had it has now got a 110 Pickup :D

The Escape and the Ranger are the common ones here. From what I've seen our Rangers are 4x4 unlike the North American ones (Bast friend who live out there has one)

We get the odd F150/250 over here, the 350 is just too damm big and dont even thing about the 450 (Only ever seen two anyway when I lived out there). Theres a couple of Dakotas and RAMS about but they arent common.

Ford 4x4's routinely get slated in our press as they have to live up to the punishment out native and Asian imports can take and they just dont.
I must confess the the activities of the UK governments for the past couple of years have been watched with frank admiration and amazement by Lord Vetinari. Outright theft as a policy had never occured to him.

Ocasionally you see a TATA on the offroad circuit. They are cheap and on paper at least the Safari looks like good value. I watched this one go round the local Play Day mud pit and it seemed quite capable in the sticky stuff with just AT tyres.

yep, like the one i looked at.. even seen one that had been lifted and had hooog wheels/tyres on it, looked like it had seen some action as well..

If you've ever seen what the Indians do to their vehicles, I think the word to best describe it would be adaptable, they will bolt anything on they can to do the job.

my first taste of off roading was when my wife bought me a 4x4driver training day, and the place i went, used landrovers, but i had a frontera and i asked him if my vauxhall would make it round, he said everything has made it round apart from the ford explora, he said the press were here for the launch, and it got stuck on an easy bit, very embarassing for ford.

It's not just coincidence that it's spelled TATa.  Have a look at one that's been around a couple of years, the rust is so bad you can usually see the driver's socks.

The Ford Bronco is built on a shortened F-150 Truck Chassis.  The Explorer is a lifted stationwagon (estate) chassis.  Not the same.  Never was impressed with explorer.  

They don't have the Ford Expedition there do they?  It replaced the Bronco.

TATA- as in "It's all gone a tater"


TATA pickups were quite popular with local builders for a while. They would be abused to within an inch of 'lives' while still under the 3 year warranty and then more or less scrapped.

not seen it yet, sorry but have never been a ford man(dad drilled that into me from a early age) but i think the ford in your neck of the woods are better then ours.

There are 2 models of explere though ?
I was refering to the larger one which over here is most definately NOT based on a station wagon ! :?:
Checked out the underside of my dads (before it was nicked) and it had proper chassis, Decent axle casings etc.
I used it several times offroad and thought it was very good. Just a bit thirsty ! :shock:
The 4.0L V6 was the cologne V6 as used in late capris. I reckon a 4.0L capri would be a bit of a laugh ! :lol:

You know how the escort has changed over the years?  The Explorer has changed over the years as well.  The new explorers are so much more capable and safe than the original.
