Electrics on rear door
« on: March 26, 2006, 19:44:22 »
Hey all,

The electrics on the rear door of my discovery are playing up, I've tried the fuses and so far I've got the rear wash working only (but the wiper doesn't work with it, or at all) anyone else had this problem?

We're wondering if its a relay gone but any other suggestions are welcome  :)

Thanks,

Brother Ted.

My wiper packed up too.  It started going slowly  for some time before stopping.  Turned out to be the shaft on the motor had seized.  Dismantled the motor assembly, cleaned it all up, lubricated it and reassembled and a OK.

One point to note though is that the rear wiper only works with the drivers door shut.  Took me ages before I realised that!  Felt a right pillock!

I now feel like a right pillock.

About 3 hours have been spent trying to work out why the bloody thing doesn't work, and all due to the fact that the door was open!

Works perfectly now

thanks!

We had taken the wiper off, taken the motor out - cleaned all the motor up, tried it before we put it back in, so we knew the motor was working. Had taken the plastic panel off the bit in the footwell on the passenger side to try and get to the relay. Taken the door cover off the back door...

Glad we stopped there to ask on here!

time to put it all back together and pretend it never happened, who'd be that stupid eh? *whistles*

But why would you not want the rear wiper not to work with the driver door open? I dont see any logic in it. It seems to me alot of things rely on the drivers door ie the windows can be opperated 30 seconds after the key has been taken out the ignition but as soon as you open the door it stops the relay.

Strange things happen in landies and the list keeps growing

Well Brother Ted, you are the first person I have helped on Mud Club.  I usually ask questions, so I am really pleased that I have at last gievn someone else a hand to fix something...

I suppose LR thought that you wouldn't need to wipe the rear window unless you were sat in the car.  Though you can still spray the window.  Does make you womder why they bothered...

i think it goes back to the RRC

the rear wash wipe wont work on a rangie unless the doors are shut, this is so you cant open the tail gate with the wiper on as you'd end up with a mangled mess. It works of the interior light system so if any doors open the wiper wont work.

being the disco shares lots of bits with the rangie i woudnt be suprised if the loom is more or less the same

The windows give you 30 seconds to get everything closed up before you leave the car, when you open the doors it assumes you've finihsed.

If it carried on, you could open the windows a little to allow a dog to breath, turn off the ignition, get out of the car........ the dog stands on the button, lowers the window and follows you wagging it's tail (and you get back to find no car).

Hmm, well my disco has manual windows, but I suppose they didn't set up the electrics any different for manual and electric.

Still, seems a bit wierd that you can still squirt the windows, just not wipe them :?:

hohum.

PS: Congrats on your first helpful tip simondarby!
