Diff question

Does anyone know which rear diff my 1996 300 tdi disco will have?
I know it'll be a 24 spline one but is it 4 bolt flange or 3?
What does that mean?
Is it the amount of bolts that hold the prop onto the diff?
And whats this rubber doughnut thingy on the rear prop shaft?
Anyone know a part number for the doughnut? Mine looks a little worn.

Yes, If it has the rubber doughnut at the diff it's a 3 bolt flange.

Those rubber doughnuts are about £20 on E-Blag.  Worth swapping as when the rubber hardens or splits a little they don't do their job quite so well.

Sorry to highjack the thread...........but do they make a different doughnut..........as now mine is lifted the rubber is pulled out of shape.
I know some people use the 200tdi prop on but didnt know if there was another option.

Jake.

The rubber donuts can be swapped for a normal UJ type prop if you swap the flange over on the rear diff, from a 3 bolt to a 4 bolt. There is a kit to do this available from some dealers (not sure who tho) otherwise it's a second hand jobby. You need a prop and a flange from a 200tdi Disco for this.

The rubber donut itself makes a big difference to driveabilty when you renew it, smooths things out quite a bit. My local Land Rover specialist has stopped fitting the cheap (eblag or britpart) rubber donuts as he's found quite a few are cracked or worn after 12 months and need replacing again. He recommends buying an ORIGINAL one from LR main dealers or other parts suppliers that sell the OEM GKN part. They cost around £40 + VAT, even from LR.

I've kept my rubber donut so has Gords, we both have a lift and I've not seen any wear on my GKN one at all in 12 months of grief.  8)

Not sure what you're referring too, but on the end of the 3 bolt prop is a small barrel rubber bush. I couldn't get mine out for love nor money, even though I had a spare provided in the rubber donut kit, so I left the original in place as it seemed to still fit ok.

The part of the flange that bolts to the diff..........on a 200 there is a big nut but the 300 there is a bit that sticks out in the centre of the flange.......is there a nut behind that and how to remove the pointy bit.

Gotcha

Yes there's a big nut exactly the same behind that centralising spigot (which goes into the bit I was referring to above)

I'm sure it just pulls out <cough> as it sits inside the 3 bolt flange.

Forgot to mention, the 200 4 bolt flange is a different length to the 300 3 bolt flange, you'll need the spacer that fits behind the flange on a 200 as well.

Great stuff...........SHOULD just pull out  :roll: .........thats the bit i thought must be fixed in a special way.........Thanks.........may fit the 200 prop untill i can get a new rubber dougnut for mine. :wink:

I'm not sure Mike
It's leaking oil from the front of the diff and the other day it threw oil onto the exhaust (which stank) and started making grinding sounds.
I'm gonna pull it out on friday and have a look. Hopefully it just wants a new pinion seal and flush the axles out (they were full of nasty syrup oily stuff's 3 weks ago)
