Temp Needle Rise& Power Loss
« on: April 19, 2006, 19:11:47 »
I am having a problem with my TD5 the temp guage suddenly rises and i have  an immediate loss off power,  and i have to pull over to the side of the road, i have  to wait for about 2 to 3 minutes and then guage drops again and then am able to drive off again. This occured about 5 to 6 times last sunday.I do not appear to have any water loss. Has anybody else had this problem or no what may be causing it Cheers Dave

Unless the temp sensor is knackered, and is giving false readings (the ECU sees the high temp and backs the power off automatically, until the temp returns to normal), it sounds like your head gasket may be on its way out   What's the milage on the truck ?, mine went at about 65k.

Have you changed the coolant lately or had any work done on the cooling system ?, you might have an air lock - but I'd er on the side of caution and get it looked at sooner rather than later. A good garage should be able to test the coolant for signs of combustion products - I assume that you've not got the dreaded mayo on the oil filler cap ?

When the gasket went on my last Td5, it went between one cylinder and a waterway - so the compression of the engine was adding more pressure to the cooling system, and (only when you went over 60mph) it blew coolant out of the expansion tank cap (the cap has a pressure vent in it).

Get it checked - Td5 heads can't be skimmed, and are over a grand for new ones

Yep, I did that too - hoping that the cheap option would fix the problem  :(

If you're going to do the head gasket yourself - there's two different thickness gaskets available, and no way of telling which one you have until it's all in bits - so get both, and take back the one you don't use !
