Well, according to the beeb.. the greatest lyrics (as voted by the morons who  live in this country) in the world are ...

"One life, with each other, sisters, brothers."  From some rather inane track by U2

Now, you may be able to tell by my tone that I don't entirely agree, so come on guys, galls and those of you who well ...  What do you think are the greatest lyrics ever ?

Note, not going to restrict this to one entry per person :D

Don't even have to think, I can answer it off the top of my head

"What's so civil about war anyway?"

Off Guns N Roses - Civil War. The whole song is a great piece, but that line sums it up better than anything else.

Arctic Monkeys 'Riot Van' has a great line that says

They got a chase last night from men with truncheon's dressed in hats
They didn't do that much wrong, still ran away though for the laugh

Skyclad - Earth Mother, The Sun And The Furious Host

He was just a lad of fifteen years
Who barely fit his breeches
A latter day Dick Whittington
Who dreamt of fame and riches
His teachers took him to one side
And promised him the earth
When all he really wanted
Was a taste of wine and mirth.

They said "Attend our university
Accept responsibility
Chant our mantra of morality
Until your throat is sore."
A feast of knowledge this contrite
Could not supress his appetite
"Please sir I want some more and more..."

Christianity was apparent as a fallacy
The Devil take your Father, Son and Holy Ghost.
The ones who have the answers
Are they who pipe the dancers
Earth Mother, the Sun and the Furious Host.

I'll give the whole nation
A sound education
Welcome to the school of hard knocks
Where the ones who know the answers
Are they that take their chances

For a small fish cast into an ocean
Full of unknown terrors
There's nothing much to smile at
In his comedy of errors.
Where streets aren't really paved with gold
And rags don't turn to riches
In this catalogue of disasters
The models were all bitches.

A Christ on every corner
For a coin he'll save your soul
But it's hard to be enlightened
While you're queueing for your dole.
When I think of all those shallow lies
They fed me in the past
There's one thing I must admit they've taught me...
That is how to laugh
At Christianity (it's nothing but a fallacy)
The Devil take your Father, Son and Holy Ghost
The ones who have the answers
Are they who pipe the dancers
Earth Mother, the Sun and the Furious Host.

This one's for the teachers
Who want to be preachers
Will God keep you warm
When you're cold?
You'd put those wracked by malnutrition
Straight onto your diet of superstition

Obviously Bob Dylan is the best but to mention Him would be highly unoriginal
'ear all, see all, say nawt; Eyt all, sup all pay nawt; An' if ivver tha does owt fer nawt; Allus do it fer thi sen.

I'd forgotten that gem..... 8) Pride and Glory as I recall still got the CD somewhere..

I'd also add Bon Scotts lyrics for AC/DC for Down Payment Blus and Its a long way to the top if you want to rock n roll plus  stuff like Freebird and Gimme back my Bullets that the late Ronnie Van Zant wrote for Lynyrd Skynyrd

This has to be one of the most beautiful lyrics ever:
The Goo Goo Dolls 'Iris'

And I'd give up forever to touch you
Cause I know that you feel me somehow
You're the closest to heaven that I'll ever be
And I don't want to go home right now

And all I can taste is this moment
And all I can breathe is your life
Cause sooner or later it's over
I just don't want to miss you tonight

And I don't want the world to see me
Cause I don't think that they'd understand
When everything's made to be broken
I just want you to know who I am

And you can't fight the tears that ain't coming
Or the moment of truth in your lies
When everything seems like the movies
Yeah you bleed just to know your alive

And I don't want the world to see me
Cause I don't think that they'd understand
When everything's made to be broken
I just want you to know who I am

I don't want the world to see me
Cause I don't think that they'd understand
When everything's made to be broken
I just want you to know who I am

I just want you to know who I am
I just want you to know who I am
I just want you to know who I am
I just want you to know who I am

Whilst I might accept that it isn't the *best* line ever written, I think calling 'One' inane is a bit harsh.  It's a fantastic song, and even better live. :smack:

Thats the thing wi music, everyone has a different opinion.......  They are all wrong though unless You agree with Me :)

Personally i like GNR - One in a million.

Oh and as seen as We mostly all seem to be metal heads summat different (only rap i can stomach)

Everlast - What its like

We’ve all seen a man at the liquor store beggin’ for your change
The hair on his face is dirty, dread-locked, and full of mange
He asks a man for what he could spare, with shame in his eyes
Get a job you ****ing slob, is all he replies
God forbid you ever had to walk a mile in his shoes
’cause then you really might know what it’s like to sing the blues

Then you really might know what it’s like...
Then you really might know what it’s like...
Then you really might know what it’s like...
Then you really might know what it’s like...

Mary got pregnant from a kid named tom that said he was in love
He said, don’t worry about a thing, baby doll
I’m the man you’ve been dreaming of.
But 3 months later he say he won’t date her or return her calls
And she swear, God damn, if I find that man I’m cuttin’ off his balls.
And then she heads for the clinic and
She gets some static walking through the door
They call her a killer, and they call her a sinner
And they call her a whore
God forbid you ever had to walk a mile in her shoes
’cause then you really might know what it’s like to have to choose

Chorus

I’ve seen a rich man beg
I’ve seen a good man sin
I’ve seen a tough man cry
I’ve seen a loser win
And a sad man grin
I heard an honest man lie
I’ve seen the good side of bad
And the downside of up
And everything between
I licked the silver spoon
Drank from the golden cup
And smoked the finest green
I stroked the fattest dimes at least a couple of times
Before I broke their heart
You know where it ends, yo, it usually depends on where you start

I knew this kid named max
He used to get fat stacks out on the corner with drugs
He liked to hang out late
He liked to get [!Expletive Deleted!]-faced and keep the pace with thugs
Until late one night there was a big gun fight and max lost his head
He pulled out his chrome .45, talked some [!Expletive Deleted!], and wound up dead
Now his wife and his kids are caught in the midst of all of this pain
You know it crumbles that way
At least that’s what they say when you play the game
God forbid you ever had to wake up to hear the news
’cause then you really might know what it’s like to have to lose

Then you really might know what it’s like...
Then you really might know what it’s like...
Then you really might know what it’s like...to have to lose
'ear all, see all, say nawt; Eyt all, sup all pay nawt; An' if ivver tha does owt fer nawt; Allus do it fer thi sen.

Well nobody else has said which surprises me as its the obvious choice.  Like the song or not You would be hard pressed to find better lyrics really........  Needs no introduction

Come gather 'round people
Wherever you roam
And admit that the waters
Around you have grown
And accept it that soon
You'll be drenched to the bone.
If your time to you
Is worth savin'
Then you better start swimmin'
Or you'll sink like a stone
For the times they are a-changin'.

Come writers and critics
Who prophesize with your pen
And keep your eyes wide
The chance won't come again
And don't speak too soon
For the wheel's still in spin
And there's no tellin' who
That it's namin'.
For the loser now
Will be later to win
For the times they are a-changin'.

Come senators, congressmen
Please heed the call
Don't stand in the doorway
Don't block up the hall
For he that gets hurt
Will be he who has stalled
There's a battle outside
And it is ragin'.
It'll soon shake your windows
And rattle your walls
For the times they are a-changin'.

Come mothers and fathers
Throughout the land
And don't criticize
What you can't understand
Your sons and your daughters
Are beyond your command
Your old road is
Rapidly agin'.
Please get out of the new one
If you can't lend your hand
For the times they are a-changin'.

The line it is drawn
The curse it is cast
The slow one now
Will later be fast
As the present now
Will later be past
The order is
Rapidly fadin'.
And the first one now
Will later be last
For the times they are a-changin'.
'ear all, see all, say nawt; Eyt all, sup all pay nawt; An' if ivver tha does owt fer nawt; Allus do it fer thi sen.

Looking at my avatar you can tell my favorite lyricist is IAN DURY, always was and always will be. His list of one liners is endless. I was also partial to the lyrics of FISH from Marillion years ago.

One verse from a track by BUSH was paricularly apt for me at a particular time in my life, separated and lonesome, living out of a suitcase

Deaf, dumb and thirty
Starting to deserve this
Leaning on my conscience wall
My blood is like wine
Unconscious all time
If I had it all again I'd change it all

Currently just about my favourite, and scarily appropriate :!:

"I'm 35 and I haven't travelled far
And I've spent all my money on this misbegotten car"

Written by Warren Zevon, but never recorded by the man himself. Brought out of obscurity by his son Jordan for the tribute album "Enjoy Every Sandwich"

Tenacious D are always good for a giggle.

been a fan of the "bloodhound gang-the bad touch" since it was released tiiiime ago!

"you and me baby aint nothing but mammels, so lets do it like they do on the discovery channels"

"Love the kind you clean up with a mop and bucket
Like the lost catacombs of Egypt only God knows where we stuck it
Hieroglyphics? Let me be Pacific I wanna be down in your South Seas
But I got this notion that the motion of your ocean means "Small Craft Advisory"
So if I capsize on your thighs high tide, B-5 you sunk my battleship
Please turn me on I'm Mister Coffee with an automatic drip
So show me yours I'll show you mine "Tool Time" you'll Lovett just like Lyle
And then we'll do it doggy style so we can both watch "X-Files""

..quality!

chillis also have some fantastic lyrics.

and Sir mix-a-lot - Baby got back! (i like big butts and i cannot lie, and you other brothers cant deny, that when a girl walks in with an ity bitty waste and a round thing in your face you get sprung!..)

oo, faithless too have some great stuff..

everyones favourite insomnia:

"I only smoke weed when I need to,
And I need to get some rest, yo, where's the sense.
I confess, I burnt a hole in the mattress,
Yes, yes, it was me, I plead guilty,
And on the count of three I pull back the duvet,
Make my way to the refrigerator,
One dry potato inside, no lie
Not even bread, jam,
When the light above my head went bang!
I can't see, something's all over me,
Greasy, insomnia please release me,
And let me dream about making mad love on the heath,
Tearing off tights with my teeth.
But there's no relief, no peace i toss and turn without cease, like a curse open my eyes, and rise like yeast.
at least a couple of weeks since i last slept, kept taking sleepers
now i keep myself checked
deeper still, at night i write by candle light, fundamental movement,
so when its black, this insomniac, taking origonal tact,
keep the beast in my nature under ceaseless attack

..i cant get no sleep.. i cant get no sleeeep..."*

*had to improvise the last few lines as source was incomplete

alkaline trio are also good for lyrics:

green day, and system of a down.. ah, i`ll shut up and let someone else have a turn!

Stereophonics Handbags And Gladrags

Ever seen a blind man cross the road
trying to make the other side
Ever seen a young girl growing old
trying to make herself a bride

So what becomes of you my love
When they have finally stripped you of
The handbags and the gladrags
That your poor old Grandad had to sweat to buy you

Once I was a young man
and all I thought I had to do was smile
Well you are still a young girl
and you bought everything in style

So once you think you're in you're out
'cause you don't mean a single thing without
the handbags and the gladrags
that your poor old Grandad had to sweat to buy you

Sing a song of six-pence for your sake
And drink a bottle full of rye
Four and twenty blackbirds in a cake
And bake them all in a pie

They told me you missed school today
So what I suggest you just throw them all away
the handbags and the gladrags
that your poor old Grandad had to sweat to buy you

Green Day - Basket Case

Do you have the time
to listen to me whine
About nothing and everything
all at once
I am one of those
Melodramatic fools
Neurotic to the bone
No doubt about it

Sometimes I give myself the creeps
Sometimes my mind plays tricks on me
It all keeps adding up
I think I'm cracking up
Am I just paranoid?
Or I'm just stoned

I went to a shrink
To analyze my dreams
She says it's lack of sex
that's bringing me down
I went to a whore
He said my life's a bore
So quit my whining cause
it's bringing her down

Sometimes I give myself the creeps
Sometimes my mind plays tricks on me
It all keeps adding up
I think I'm cracking up
Am I just paranoid?
Uh, yuh, yuh, ya

Grasping to control
So I better hold on

Sometimes I give myself the creeps
Sometimes my mind plays tricks on me
It all keeps adding up
I think I'm cracking up
Am I just paranoid?
Or I'm just stoned
