200tdi problems
« on: April 23, 2006, 20:43:22 »
Hello ,went in to some deepish water today and got stuck and had to be pulled out, afterwards the power steering was'nt working ,fixed that the belt had come off, then i noticed the engine was alot noisier and the oil light was flickering on ,checked the oil level on the dipstick and it was higher than normal .
Started the engine and drove a little noticed another problem ,the turbo was not working removed the air filter hose to the turbo and the lttle impeller that you can see moves side to side big time so guessing its had it .
The question is can water of got in to the oil making the engine noisy and the level high and did the water kill the turbo.Came home on the AA wagon not good .
  Any help much appriceated.

ooo sounds like an expensive day out!

You could still run the turbo if its not hitting the casing! But if the impeller does his the casing you will have trouble getting a new one on an exchange basis, as they dont like damaged casings!

Has your oil gone milky or grey instead of being black? If so there may be water in the oil! its worth a change anyway! Its worth having a look at the gearbox oil aswell!

Cheers

The oil wasnt milky first of all but i looked tonight and it does seem to be now ,im thinking this is the low oil pressure problem so i will change it and look at the gearbox oil, thinking of taking sump off to have a look aswell. The turbo impeller does move alot from side to side so most prob touching casing ,is an exchange the normal thing to do ?
Thanks for comments so far Rob.

Yep an exchange is the way forward.... unless yours is too damaged - then you'll got charged a surcharge!

I've used www.turboactive.com in the past, and was impressed with the service.

The turbo impeller will always have some play, that's how they work.... it's only when it gets excessive you need to worry - i.e. touching the sides!!

If the turbo has gone, be careful when you run it… as if the seals have gone it could start blowing oil straight into the inlet manifold – which means the engine will run on its own oil.  And you then only have two ways of stopping the engine….

Firstly, run away and wait for it to go bang as it over revs.

Or, using something flat (not a rag as it will get shuck into the impeller) bung the intake to the turbo up, so no air can get in.

Best to run it with pipe from the turbo to the intercooler disconnected.

Although…..

Definitely sounds like you've got water in the oil.

Did the engine suddenly stall when you got stuck??  I.e. is there a chance the engine could have breathed in a bit of water and hydraulic’d??
As that would explain the lumpiness and the noise.

Have you used any coolant??
It might just be that you’ve blown the head gasket… in which case, not that hard to fix.

Hi Ian ,thanks for your advice ,the impeller is touching the housing you can hear it when i run it for a short time (stopped running the car now dont want to do more damage ).
The car didnt stop and car has lost no water ,taken sump off and some sludge in the bottom ,going to flush through and change oil and filter and clean pick up .
Hope all this sorts the oil pressure light coming on .think the turbo has gone lots of play and noise  :( wonder if lack of good oil to it caused it to fail ,did try to limp home on the day then called the recovery people ,wondering about a secondhand one .

Cheers Rob.
