Fuel injector pump timing 200tdi
« on: April 26, 2006, 09:49:11 »
Wonder if anyone can help?

Very sluggish 200tdi and has been for ages.

Finally decided to try and sort it out last night.

Decided to check the fuel pump timing , so removed the little cover on the timing case, inserted a 9.5 mm drill bit into the timing hole on the injector pump (its about at 11.00),  went to check the flywheel mark - no mark.

So - removed the drill bit and turned the crank until timing mark in flywheel appeared in view.  Went back to check fuel injector pump.  The injector pump appears to be about 45degrees retarded. (ie the hole in the face plate is at about 9.00)

So assuming this is correct - would the engine run at all or would it just be sluggish?

Is it simple to adjust the fuel injector pump timing by loosening off the 3 bolts on the face plate or is it  start from scratch (take timing cover off etc)and redo the whole lot job?

Any help gratefully received. :D

regards

You could try adjusting it first, mark the back plate with some paint and then you can always put it back to how it is now.

Did my 300, that was sluggish and poor to start, fixed the problem.

Engine would run....

But would be very underpowered, or very smokey.... and not be too happy.

You 'might' be able to get that much adjustment off the fuel injector pump... if not... then it means stripping the front cover off to do the redo the timing correctly.  Is there any chance you didn't do the belt up correctly and it's skipped a tooth or two (or four!!)

Other thing is whether the camshaft timing is correct.

Dont always rely on the timing marks..........some people have been known to remove the flyhweels and not put em back on in the right place......most have a locating pin now......just a thought but ive had it done to me.........took me about 2 days to work out why i couldnt get it to run right.
Where there is mud there will be someone stuck.........then the fun begins

AFAIK you can't get a TDi flywheel on in the wrong place.

All the front end pulleys have key's so you can't get them wrong!!

As Richie's mentioned.... unlike some cars!!!

Thanks chaps.

I didn't do the timing belt so dont know if it was done properly.  But its been sluggish ever since it was done.

I'll see if there is enough movement in the pump to get the drill into the timing hole.  If not then I'll have to take case off.

Thanks for the help.
