Well the day Elmo gets welded is getting closer, so the MOT is too.

I have a set of Wipac 100W spotlamps, I understand these are illegal for on-road use.
I plan to fit them on the bullbar via a relay.
Main 12V power to the relay will be switched via a dashboard switch.
Trigger power for the relay I plan to feed from the main beam power supply.

So, in other words, with the dashboard switch in the "off" position they won't light irrespective of the headlamp setting.
With the dashboard switch to "on", they will light with the main beams.

Question is, would this be legal?

Auxillary lights are not tested as part of the MOT just leave them turned off

the setup you are desciribing is what is legally required for fitting any auxilliary lights.
From memory the functioning of the lights should be tested during the MOT, the should check they are able to be isolated from the main beam circuit, otherwise this would fail being fit for road use.
my rally car passes its MOT with 150 bulbs in all the lights and i've never had any problems, thats not to say a pedantic MOT tester would check the bulb wattage and fail you.

my 300tdi has wipacs on the front and mot man has never questioned them just passed it thru the only thing it failed on last year was the indicator bulbs not being orange enough :roll:

You would need a really heavy duty switch for that purpose. Otherwise you would need a second relay.

Much better is to have the main power feed direct to a fuse and then onto the battery + terminal.

Run a cable from the main beam switch to the "dashboard switch" and then onto the relay trigger.  This means that the switch on the dash only has low current and also provides you with the means to disable them if you wanted, or engage the switch to have them work with main beam.

My apologies, the 12V feed I am disussing is already relayed. It fed some old spots which were fitted to the vehicle. I intend to double-relay the circuit and utilise it as described.

dont hold your breath on mot'ing a motor at the mo, vosa computer system is down, i now have one disco and one hybrid off the road, due to the agency
