So who is the expert on travel in Asia....
« on: April 29, 2006, 14:25:43 »
My wife and her mother are currently in China for business. Since they finished business early, they decided to visit Hong Kong today. Unfortunately, the visa they have only allows one entry to China and they are not being allowed back into the country from Hong Kong   They were being thrown off the bus as i was just speaking to her a few minutes ago
I thought Hong Kong was part of China these days.... apparantly not totally.

I have texted her the flight details in the hope the proof of where they are going will help. Of course, all their belongings, including flight tickets, are in the hotel! I've also sent her the phone number for the Chinese Embassy in London, but the visa office is only open 9-12am Mon to Fri!

Looks like I am going to have to get them a flight out of Hong Kong to the UK and they will just have to abandon their belongings in China.

The best thing to do is to try and get hold of the british consul in Hong Kong, not easy on a Saturday but they should ahve an emenrgeny service.

Hong Kong is part of china but the chinese treat it differently, if they really want to they could try again, it could be just a bad guy on teh border.

Out of office hours Consular Emergency Service:
 in hong Kong Tel: (852) 2901 3000

They will be able to speak to the chinese and get it sorted, even if it is only to get their belongings sent to hong kong

Thanks for that, guys.

Because it looked unlikely they could get back into China before their flight leaves on Monday evening, I booked flights out of Hong Kong. This is what they asked me to do. Hugely expensive being one way. Then I get a call from my father in-law saying they have found that 'the office' is open in the morning and they can sort visa's so I should cancel the flights! This, I did, because the booking office was shutting 5 minutes later...... at the expense of a 50% charge   There goes £820 down the drain then

I then get a call from Sarah saying that they MIGHT be able to sort out visa's, not that they CAN sort them out ARGGGGHHHH....I think I'll go and find a bus to jump under.... if there were any out here in the boonies. There are certain things that can strain a marriage you know

The problem is the type of visa they have. It is a single entry type and Hong Kong is deemed to have left China it seems.

sounds like the best option  is to sit tight until they know exactly where they stand with visas then worry about the flights later.

Yep. That's what I am going to do now.

£820 would have bought a suspension kit AND 31" tyres for the Zuke...... I mean, priorities and all that! They can just stay there.....

Now, now, Colin! As it happens, I get on OK with my mother in law.... it's the father in law I sometimes struggle with   He's fine in small doses, but beyond half and hour at a time......

Anyway, it appears they have managed to wangle something and got through Chinese imigration this morning. Not sure what they did because by all accounts, their visas were simply not valid! Bet they had a few beads of sweat forming on their brows
