Front Shock Turrets

Morning all,

A little inspection last night revealed that both of my shock turrets are rotten and I will need to replace them, how tricky is this?

There is also something a little strange going on with my drivers side spring where is seats on the axle, it seems to be sitting on an angle - will get some pics and post when I can.

Check your spring seat mount on the axle, it could well be rotten.


As for turrets, they are not very hard to remove, but they are held down by 4 bolts on a ring (sandwiched between the chassis and the spring). these are notorious ******* for stripping threads (have a cold chisel and hammer to hand) or the bolts shearing if you try to remove them, and will almost certainly need replacing.

If you mean the bit of pressed plate at the bottom of the spring; then take the spring out, remove the shock and unbolt them. Fit some new ones and reassemble. Annoyingly, you do have to take the shock out to do this. Which will more than likely mean replacing the shock as well (because, dang, do them nuts ever seize on).

And lo, what should be a simple job becomes a more involved, and more expensive one. On the plus side (yes, there is one), you don't need spring compressors or fancy kit to do the job. Just a selection of spanners, a trolley jack and endless, endless patience. As said above, a hammer and pointy hard-stick often helps too......

Replace two front shocks - 3hrs
Replace four rear shocks - 30 mins

as clbarclay said get a spare turret securing ring AND the nuts for it whilst you are at it (  I forgot the nuts and they are some strange thread or other that I could match from my box of hundreds of nuts so I had to pay a return visit to the spares shop)

I also found it usfull to use a high lift to lift the body up whilst supporting the weight of the axle on a trolly jack and axle stand. It takes the need to compress the shock out of the equation.

I didn't mean the actual spring seats (i've never had a problem with the seat its self), My suspicion was the part under the spring seat that is welded to the rest of the axle, it also has the captive nuts fixed to it for holding the pring seat on. Unfortunatly in my experiance this seams a far more common problem.


If this is the case then its a fabrication job :roll: , involving:
Welding
Grinding
Drilling
etc.


Or if you don't have the tools/time then its either replacement axle or a garage job.
