Egr blanking plate results
« on: May 04, 2006, 20:10:58 »
Finally Fitted my egr blanking plate today  :)  "took long enough been in garage 2 months and took 3 mins to fit"
was even suprised that the funny coloured lumps of manky metal even undid with a tiny squirt of wd40 woo hoo.
Even better as i wont find out if theres any change untill friday nite when i drive it down for some surgery on the clutch.

just wondered if anyone had noticed any significant change to the car with the plate fitted?

I finally managed to get round to doing mine last weekend.

Haven't noticed a massive difference yet - maybe slightly quicker to get the turbo spinning. The main thing I do notice is more black smoke coming from the exhaust when accelerating hard, but I did dislodge quite a lot of the black goo and the old girl is nearly ready for an oil change.

Hopefully nothing more serious than that anyway!

Before - the blanking plate is on the engine block and have a hose without the junction on if that makes sense?

Hi Keith,

I've not really heard anyone else have much smoke, so I wouldn't worry too much. I think a lot of it is all the crud from the hoses being blasted out of the system (hoping anyway) so am going to clean the intercooler out at the weekend if I have time.

Check out this earlier post if you haven't seen it for EGR stuff:

http://forums.mud-club.com/viewtopic.php?t=11314&start=0

and here for cleaning intercooler if you want to do that as well:

http://www.landroverdiscovery.net/ in the tecnical section.

I used to have some pics that showed where I have put my plate, but can't find them, so will take some at the weekend.

I get the impression it doesn't matter too much what you do as longt as it blocks the air flow - I've seen a variety of ideas on other posts.

Hope that helps a bit...  :?

Fitted mine straight to the block, but also changed to Alisport silicon hoses at the same time.

Not sure which one is responsible - but it's a smoother, more responsive ride.

Will se if I can find some pics.

I cleaned Julies 300TDi intercooler recently, lots of black s**t.  Anyway, You don't hear the turbo whistle anymore, anyone else notice this?

I still get the turbo whistle, but that's maybe from the snorkle?  :?

When I did mine I removed the EGR completely.
You can either do what I did and use the blanking plate to go over the hole left in the exhaust manifold and replace the top intercooler pipe or, get two blanking plates and use one for the exhaust manifold and one for the top intercooler pipe.

A few Photos for you:

The Exhaust manifold with the EGR valve removed and blanking plate in position.

Maybe not Keith, the blanking plate can also go in the connection between the EGR valve and the branch pipe coming off the intercooler/inlet manifold.
This will give the same results, blocking the EGR, I just chose to remove the valve completely.

i put mine between the valve and the pipe rather than onto the manifold, as the bolts where easier to undo!

What I did get was the valve pushing out sooty deposits onto the engine bay.  there must be some kind of relief mechanism in there.

Thanks for the pics Budgie - those were exactly like the ones I was trying to find to put in my post originally.

For those of you who have removed the valve altogether, what have you donw with the lead and hose that connected to the valve? At the moment mine are just tucked away down the side of the air filter block. Should I crimp the ends or anything?

When I was driving to day I only had some smoke on start up and hardly any when driving normally (even under hard acceleration) so that appears to be OK now. I popped the bonnet last night and saw that one of the bolts on the blanking plate had cone a bot loose so maybe that was causing the smoke?? Anyway - all tightened up and seems to be OK.

Fingers crossed anyway...  :)

Another pic. (300 TDi Disco)

The Turbo whistle still remains, but it kicks in slightly earlier than before.

Rare for a TDi, but on Friday I actually managed wheel spin!  Only for a second - but it was there.

Fair point Pux. The only answer I've seen to this before is that LR make the blanking plates themselves, so it must be OK. I think it was an emissions thing for certain countries...?

Mine is a Land Rover part.  The blanking plate is LR Part No ERR4698 and the gasket is ERR7173.

Just ordered a blanking plate for Clarety as she seems sluggish up to just over 2000 rpm. Charity would pull from 1500 rpm.

Going to blank off the EGR and flush the intercooler at the weekend if I get time. Will report back my findings

Check the condition of the hoses to & from the intercooler for splits and de-lamination on the inside while you're there Cliff.

Will do

Decided to whip the intercooler out tonight as I dont need to drive her till the weekend. And.........  My God, I thought the 200tdi intercooler I cleaned last year was dirty. This one is unbelievable. At first glance the hoses seem in good condition but full of oil deposits and crud. No wonder she is struggling :?  Intercooler is full of parasene at the minute. Gonna let it soak overnight.

What a great cheap mod :D  As people have said, much smoother and pulls noticably better at low revs. Much better from standstill.
