Anti -Roll Bars...

Just about got a 300 tdi ready for the mud, now ,what todo with the anti roll bars ,leave them on or take them off , any fors/against, personal expierences ,all info greatly recieved..........

ive took my rear one off its good for offroad but on road you get a bit seasick of the roll .the rear end allways seems a bit loose but if you can live with that then its ok
200 tdi
reverse dislocating cones
2" lift kit, pro comp shocks
steering gaurd,diff gaurds
tank gaurd plus detachable towhitch
rocksliders
snorkel,full breather kit
235/85/16 insa turbo sarhas
a bar, and lots of lights
cd/cb normally on chan 5

if you fit stronger shocks and springs then ditch the ARB's but if youve got old worn suspension, then leave em on, cos the price youll pay for on road boat like handling aint worth it

You are looking at a potential MOT fail if they aren't on the vehicle.. so you need to be a bit careful.

Jas i had to take mine off when had the replacement axel on the front or it would still be on now horrible on the road but good off it  :wink: . The back one came off because it kept on flipping over. I beleve you can put a spacer in to stop that now.
 If i was you for the gain you get off road its not worth it leave them on. You could alway wip the off and have a go make your own mind up :wink:

mine has no anti roll bars fitted....thats front and rear. it passes its mot every year with no problems. it doesnt handle bad at all.

Thats cos yours is a 200 :p

The 300's must have a ARB for the MOT otherwise it will fail, especially if the MOT man knows that the particular model of vehicle should have one.

Which is funny, 'cos with a 2" lift the rear one is a liabilty and I would have thought more likely to fail, it's down to understanding though and....

....no, I'll shut up.

Anyway, mine has 2 bars on the back and one on the front, it handles well on road (although the BFG MT have softened up now, ohh crikey :shock: ) but off-road it isn't them that limits my travel, it does reduce contact pressure on the drooping wheel though but then my car has 5 ARB altogether, 2 of them being air-operated :D

Just to add to the confusion.
My 200 Tdi has a 3 inch lift ( 2 inch springs and 1 inch spacers)
and i wouldnt dream of taking the anti roll bars off.
She handles good on and even better off road.

i have a 300tdi and have taken mine off and it passed its mot like that, and she handles fine on road, but there is not much gain off road only a little. :wink:

i agree with mark.yellow.series 3
if the worst came to it you know insurance companys will do thier best to get out of paying as they would say the vehicles not road worthy also i dont know about where you live but in derbyshire you are getting alot of ministry inspectors + dvla + the police stopping and doing inspections on vehicles and we all know what the ministry are like and i suppose if there was no anti roll bar on they would take your vehicle off the road and that could cost alot

also surely landrover would not of fitted one if it was not neccessary but obviuosly they had to to get it through the safety tests from the ministry i may be wrong but i wouldnt be able to live with myself if something happened to my family if something happened because i had taken something off

On a standard car, or a slightly lifted one I'd say leave them, they don't limit articulation as evident by the RTI values for RRC with and without sway bars as our American friends call them.  Once you get into serious mods/lifts then you have already redesigned the suspension, so as long as it's deemed safe for the road, who can argue?  as long as you tell your insurers and if neede get an engineer's report.

Out of interest, before roll bars were added, LR fitted stronger metalstic bushes to RRC when the EFi was introduced, to help the handling of the faster new model, I think these bushes were changed back on the ARB equiped models but I'm not sure.  If you poly-bush your car you WILL notice it gets stiffer, this is why I have 2 rear bars on mine, the front was too stiff/back too soft, particularly when loaded.

Then again, you should see the ARB under the back of my 'new toy', now that does go round corners :D

mine didnt actully have any when i bought her. i did ask the owner at the time if he had taken them off to which he replid a definate no. he was the second owner. he bought it from a landy dealer so i can only assume that either it wasnt made with any or the first owner removed them for some reason many many years ago  :shock: . the mounts are there but they look like nothing has ever been fitted? could that be possible
