Going to have a go at making our own tubular bumpers very soon for our Disco 1. Just wondered if anyone else had made them and if so could you give any advice, eg, lengths of pipe and angles to cut.
Any advice would be much apreciated.

Hi mate thanks for that, but as I can weld and have access to a welder and can buy the steel from a local supplier I reckon I can make both front and back for under a ton. The steel company will bend pipe as well for a small charge, so I am hoping to have all the tube bent and cut and then just have to weld together myself, makes life easier.
Thanks
Fram.

I'm making a new front bumper so I can have HD recovery points on the front, with towball to accept a removable winch.  Anyway what I've decided on is a pair of 'dumb irons' likeon a series with the bumper bar bolted to the top once in place.  Not only will it be lighter to manhandle but easier to line up and allow for production tolerance too.

Made this the other week end tubes cut at 10 Deg as centre section tight back but true angle on the front is closer to 15 Deg

Another view, Shows extra mounting points for streering guard, 8x 8.8 M10 bolts holding it on, with 20mm bar recovery points.

Chirst I think im going to have to think a bit more about mine

If I can get it to look half that good ill be a happy man

I did manage to pick up some 3" inside bore pipe about 8 inches wider than the landy is so once iv cut it down and made a winch plate I should have a fair amount left over and not bad for the cost of a pint and being a cheeky scouser

anyone else made any custom bumpers that can post pics or links to I think with the longer days getting here there could be some nice projects to be done

Hey Fatusbloke, I recognise that bumper from Bainland at Easter! We're the ones with the green Disco that had the dodgy box section lift.
Basically the same sort of thing that we are thinking of, but we are going for the full tubular thing. Really like the way you've taken it round the corners, just makes a nice tidy job of it.
Another idea we had was to add recovery eyes (same shape as the Mill Services bolt on ones) and jacking points onto the bumper brackets where they bolt to the chassis. Will have to go and buy a couple of longer bolts to make it fit as we already have the steering guard on, but I can't see any reason why it wouldn't work.
