You could just change the front output bearing on the transfer box instead of the whole box.  :D

There's details of the proceedure in the Tech section on Discoweb.

there should be play as in clockwise and anticlockwise.(a little)

but there should be no left right /up down play

the play is up down left and right so if the transfer box does have to come out then how difficult is it, will it come out by its self or does the g'box have to come out aswell

As has been suggested, it's probably only in need of a new bearing. If it does have to come out it's quite a simple job - remove propshafts, disconnect linkages/speedo cable/etc and unbolt from main gearbox. The biggest problem is that it is VERY heavy, so manoeuvering it about to remove it from tha main box isn't easy, and be very careful.

The job is covered in the Defender Haynes manual, so would gues the Disc one will also cover it.

Regards

Wolfie

ive got the disco haynes and it says its easier to take out with the g'box. Hopefully i can ease the bearing out with the box in place but looking on the web it says that quite oftern the bearing wont ease out form the out side the transfer box has to be split

I read all the stuff about doing the bearing with the t box still in place.
Mine is a 200tdi and it was so much grief that it would have been as easy to just remove the t box.

IMHO the bearing cannot be changed without removing the front output housing anyway and that's a pig of a job in situ as it means dropping the gearbox crossmember and you'll find you'll have a pig of a job getting at one of the bolts to the housing insitu becaue it is tucked behind the diff lock light switch so needs removal of the console etc. inside the motor.

I definately wouldn't try another front bearing insitu.
