i turned my daughters bike into a 4 wheeler today ,and fitted new stabalisers .1/2 hour later they were bent and no use to man or beast    so out came the welder and some nice angled steel ,and soon we were back on the road ..wrong ten minutes later they bent again .. bent again your wondering  :?: well my daughter is special needs and cant ride a bike for toffee and at 13 years of age i cant find stabalisers anywhere that will take her weight ... so monday im going to the garage and not coming out untill i have made a set that would hold a house up

Someone may have one or at least the boys & girls will keep their eyes open :)

Well worth while checking around the carious boards for disabled people as a lot come up second hand as well. Also quite a few on ebay atm.

Watching with interest!!
Our son is three years old, and has Autism, we have just started trying to teach him to ride a bike, but we're having problems.
There might be some information that comes up that could help us in the future.

Hey guys.I'm an Occupational Therapist Student (nearly qualified though!) and one of our core "things" in Occupational Therapy is adaptive equipment and adapting occupations or activities so they can be enjoyed by everyone regardless of ability if deemed meaningful to that individual. However,it still pee's me off at the lack of resources made available for stuff like this and when they are they are bloody pricey.Professionally, it wouldn't be right for me to give my make-shift-blue peter-esque ideas for this as I wouldn't want anyone to get hurt! I can however, have a browse through some of the mags I get sent monthy full of the up to date equipment for people of all ages to see if there is something there that may help you.

I could also suggest to you both that maybe other activities that promote balance and co-ordination skills may help your children with this particular activity-I know that's somewhat vague but it's hard to reccomend activities for individuals I don't know without carrying out an assessment.

Wish you all the best and keep up the good work!
Sally.

just as a quick suggestion as i'm an engineer couldnt you make some sort of a frame stabilisers so as well as attaching onto rear wheel bolts have the A uprights mounted to frame below the seat post?

just a thought

Sally, sounds like a really rewarding job.
Thankfully my lad doesn't have any physical problems, just has problems grasping ideas on how to do things. Get him on his bike and he just tries to pedal backwards all the time.....well it is easier.....or to just scoot along, then gets very frustrated when he doesn't get the desired affect.

mines just at that age where she's too big for normal stabalisers ,confidence is a problem for her ,i usually tow her around with a rope but stabalisers just bend heres a pic before they bent ....( edited) this is the bike she out grew ,stabalisers were bending then as well

tommorow i will make a set that will hold a motorbike up lol       i wont be using flimsy metal ,however the weight concerns me :!: the poor kid wont be able to peddle it
