in a friendly fashion,in your oppinion which 4x4 would top your list for reliabillity,performance,value for money etc.
 I have not had my 4x4 long so its difficult to make a knowledgable judgement,but i would be interested in your views

To answer the questions:

1) Reliabillity- Toyota Landcruiser.
2) Performance- 'out of the box' must be a Defender but many 4x4's can be modified to be equally good offroad.
3) Value for money- Series Landrovers and Defenders tend to be overpriced for what you actually get for the money. A Disco, RR Classic or other 4x4 therfore often represent better 'value'.

As a good all round familly & offroad capable vehicle the one car I might settle on would be a mid 1990's Land Cruiser 4.2VX diesel (with a bit of tinkering) to do the kind of stuff I do now but better!

Its all horses for courses though and depends what you need the car for.  Do your reasearch. Pay your money and take your choice. Then live with it! And try not to let it other people tell you x is better than y....

it depends what you want it for and your budget... oh and if you are technically able to fix things yourself or budget for others to do it for you.

Well on a cost basies for second hand and aftermarket parts all except the land rover and suzuki are out. The suzuki is an excellent toy and very cheep to run but is a bit small for a family. So the land rover but which one defender rangerover or discovery for me its the disco 1 its got the room, 7 seats, cheep to buy, cheep to run tdi or gased, lots of parts available and easy to fix, comfortable to drive.
 Of coures there are trucks that are better in some areas but as a hole on a bugget you carn't beat a DISCO.

Best 4x4... Tough one.

Reliability... Series 3 - Local Police force had one up until 2002 for tackling the hilly jobs.
Performance... Bowler Wildcat - Hmmmmm *Drools*
Value for Money... Lada Niva - Super Cheap when you consider any Series under £1k is usually a rust bucket.

DISCO 1 its cheap to repair cheap to buy the spares are easy to come by either second hand spares or new and loads of after market prouducts, also an ideal family vehicle, plus some have really good specs e.g ex xs etc etc

Of the standard production vehicles (the bowler is realy a race bread special) off road one of the best is a merc G wagon, standard fitmeant is manual diff locks front and rear, need i say more.

OK, having said this, if the diff locks arn't working like on the one at home :x  then don't bother off road, the suspension is too stiff.

Would have to go for early 300TDI Disco even though I run a Suzuki. The Suzuki is cheap and loads of fun but is cramped and bl**dy uncomfortable!.

Pretty much any LR coiler will be good off- road, why do you think so many of us have them?  AT the moment Defenders hold their money too well to grab a bargain, Discos are starting to catch up now too, so don't ignore the later classic Range Rovers, often better spec'ed, lighter and less top-heavy so better off-road than the Disco, if a little less practical as a big family car.  Under the skin a Disco is a Range Rover, so parts-wise there is nowt to choose.

Depends! the large vehicles are not alweays so good! there was a unimog at whaddon last weekend and on the soft gound it just sunk upto the headlights we tried to pull it out with five motors but it wouldnt budge! eventually it came out with a series of winches and snatch blocks! i know that i certinally got a lot more off roading in than the driver of the unimog last weekend!

In answer to the question I would prefer to drive a 110 but I already have 2 LWT’s and 2 V8 hybrids and just recently bought a brand new Zafira, the only reason I went for the Zafira was essentially a price thing that and the wiflet forced me to buy the damn thing.

The Zafira is a nice enough motor and indeed it fits our 3 children and their various car seats into it and also fits the double pushchair in, so whilst on occasion we carry 7 people we usually only carry five which means we gain the large boot space.  This was certainly the wiflet’s argument for buying it saying that a 12-seated 110 was having too much unused seating.

This all said we sold her P38 last year and she still whines and moans about selling it (don’t even get me started on her selling the Rolls Royce she got given as a present from her ex husband) and I almost convinced her to buy another but alas there isn’t that many real nice 4.6L on the market at the right price when you really want one. (Next week no doubt ten of the damn things will be up for sale now we have not got the cash).

Just need to convince her to buy me a MUD number plate for at least one of the landrovers, though if anyone has BNT67K, BNT65K, BNT64K or BNT68K and wants to sell it give me a shout


Sorry to ramble on Sunday morning nothing to do. :?
