Have replaced my steering column, no probs dead easy.  Now I am just finishing off, fitting my indicator / wiper stalks and steering wheel.

Anyway, the damn wheel wont go back on, the top bit of column is shorter on the new one so i can only fit the wheel without the stalks. :(

I have spoken to the breaker I got it from who assured me all 200 tdi are the same (alhouth the mounts for the cowling are different 2).  He recons it just needs tapping back up from the engine bay?  Does this sound like [bauble]?  I have undone the pinch bolt on the uj and tapped the column end with a bar and hammer but it doesnt seem to move?  Have I been shafted?

Any quick replies would be very much appreciated as I am still at work battling with the damn thing....

Cheers,

Mike

That is right............you might need to remove the bottom uj to line it back up..........but they do move

Are you 100% sure?  Its just i just put the old one in the vice and beat the crap out of the steering wheel end with a hammer and cant seem to get that to drop as this one appears to have done.

What a pain in the arse, Need to undoe the bolts that go through the bulkhead in order to move the column and get the UJ off.  Doing it on your own is a nitemare.  And who said baubles? lol ;)

I have come to the conclusion its the wrong one!  http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/Land-Rover-Discovery-steering-column_W0QQitemZ4630600611QQcategoryZ27379QQssPageNameZWDVWQQrdZ1QQcmdZViewItem

That specifies chassis numbers so I assume there must have been a change?  Also that one has the same cowling mount brackets as my old one but the new one is different.

Tapping up did move it a few mm but not the full inch I need to get the wheel back on.  :(

Maybe find one local so you can see and remove the parts you need.

We've found that alot of parts on our 200tdi are different than you see advertised for 200's ours is a KA VIN no. and we always make sure we give the VIN number when ordering parts.

Just had a quick look in the Rimmers catalogue and they list 3.
up to VIN LA (1994) part no. NTC7818
VIN MA (1994 on) non cruise control part no. QMB101850
                           cruise control ANR3654

Their price for the part you have is £311.38

Might be worth taking the old one with you when you go to get another one.

If you are in St Helens, try WJ Autos in Wigan. I think he has an advert in Auto Trader, he has an L reg 200 in that he is breaking

If it is an older disco try looking at some of the rangy ones too, I know the hybrid is rangy steering, and the shaft on that does move up and down, as I was working on it the other week, fitting new steering u/j's to the box

But take a good look to see if the top half matches your disco

Mine is a HA chassis number and classic rangey bits seem fine, there seems to have been a number of changes in the marque, but one BIG one at VIN JAxxxx onwards.
