is there any way the pipe on the sender unit could block up

Yes, crud in the tank can be dragged into the pick-up pipe.
However, have you checked the metal pipes on top of the sender?
They're prone to rotting and the lift-pump sucks air instead of diesel.
Try coating them in vaseline first and see if improves fuel flow.
