went for a play last night in the mud as you do ,so off me and my m8 went having a right good time then my m8 went to climb a hill and then he said he heard bang from the back axle so i had to winch him out ,he had no normal drive the only drive he had was high , low diff drive , the back prop was spinning and all you heard was click click click . so can anyone point me to what he might of broke , his vehicle is a 200 tdi i dont think there is anything different from the 200 to the 300 but my luck if i didnt tell you there would of been alot , we are going to strip it tonight to see if we can find it but we would really like help on were to look first. as dont really want to take the back axle off . i will take my camera tonight and once found the fault i will take pictures to show you all . any help and advice would be great

well mate with my limited knowledge i would say pull the half shafts and check them first. 20 mins work. if not them it could be the diff.

you shouldnt need to remove the rear axle in full mate. infact you wont. even if its the diff. thats a couple of hours work at most  :wink:

first check the shafts, 5 stud on end of each hub, depending on his wheels he might not even have to take the wheels of

after that its have a look at the diff, not a difficult job on the rear

drop the prop of at the diff end only and undo the ring of nuts, you'll need the shafts out too

if its gone expect to find mangled bits of gear teeth in the base of the diff pan

If the diff has gone then check the number of splindes, it should be 10 spline (I think) or if it's a later one then it could be 24, you can count the splindes on the halfshafts, that'll tell you which you have.  :wink:

got it off and it ended up being the diff completely gone , the bar that holds the 2 cogs in the centre had snapped and one of the cogs had shattered please see pictures thanks for all the help

I picked up two for £40/each + postage.

ps: I'm also on my fourth diff. 1 front and three rear....big boots and heavy foot do not help :!:
