winch or tyres????

well i have a dession to make and im finding it difficult.  now that my suspension is working really well on the disco i am now ready to move on with the next mod. ( never ending ) so i could either buy some mud tyres, something like machos in the same size as i have 225/75/16's or i could go down the winch route. my tyres that i have fitted are doing a good job ( bfg at's ) but dont self clean all that fast.

so what do i go for  :?

oh i dont know what do do  :lol: . my truck is used as a family car all week and at weekends i go of for a play. its never used in extreme conditions. but tyres or winch would both help in different ways.

your opinions would be greatly recieved guys n girls.....

If you fancy having a second set of tyres for playing with I have a 'used' set of 205R16 Kingpin HiLanders (diamond pattern) with tons of tread left on them.  These are the same rolling radius as your current tyres, but are very aggressive.  Not brilliant on the road, but do the trick off it.  These tyres have come off the racer and have only done two Hillrallies (i.e. very low mileage).  They are a little scuffed, but sound and cheap!

Have to agree with the general trend here. The best idea is not to get stuck in the first place, so tyres should be the priority. However, if you like 'playing' then getting stuck and winching yourself out might be considered 'fun'  :lol:

The Machos are quite aggressive so I wouldn't recommend them for everyday road use. So only treat them as a second set.

i had a set of colway mt's fitted to shogun before but i found they made a terrible noise  :twisted: ..... i did like the grip on them though.  i used them as daily tyre aswell and they wore quite slow too......but i know i dont want them now which is good......  so it might be looking like it will be a set of tyres now........ :D

trust me when i say this.....i dont need mud tyres to get further into trouble    :lol:  :lol:  i manage that on at's......then spend 3 hours digging it out  :lol:  :lol:

I have 285x85x16s with no mods..they self clean great and are wicked in sticky stuff :lol:

Also quite on the road despite somone telling me they are noisy

Go for the macho's... I run 265/70/16s now on my disco...  they touch on full lock on the radius arms so maybe I went a bit too big... but they do the buisiness... this pic was before the 2" lift...

My advice is if you are ever going out with a comittee member of the DOC then get a winch!!

Believe amazons are pretty much the same as Machos, just from a different manufacturer!

Both use the Yokohama Geolander tread pattern - or at least a copy thereof.

Seen both used in competition and they both perform well.  Better on the road and hard tracks than Diamonds (so I have been told) but not quite as good when it gets muddy.

Like all tyres they are a compromise.

My vote would be spend the money on tyres. A mate with a tow rope will do most stuff you'll need a winch to do unless you're really pushing it.

Okay, if the vehicle is a daily drive and you don't want to be doing anything extreme (like swapping tyres twice a weekend), then IMO, avoid any of the really agressive tyres - a combination of limited road life and limited road manners really mean you should be looking for a more 'all round package' (plus a better quality, first life tyre - most of the stuff listed above is a remold).

I use BFG MTs  - not the cheapest I'll admit, but at 50k miles and still going strong, I'm not complaining. I've heard good reports also about Goodyear MTRs and the Kuhmo MTs, too.

People do well in Challenge events on MTs, so unless you've a really specialist need, then you don't need Diamonds, or Machos, or Chacos or Anacondas, or Grizzlies etc. It will pay dividends in terms of overall package. They also won't dent your fuel economy as much.

cheers guys  for all the advice so far    you have been a massive help. i am now just looking at tyres. i have been offered a good deal on a set of insa turbo tyres. they seem to look pretty good on paper. i know they are remoulds but i am on a bit of a budget.  if i went out and bought say bfg mt's and i ripped a side wall i would have to take my disco off the road until money was better so hense the need for cheaper options.   i am looking at the trekers here

Do you mean the Dakars?  Similar in pattern to the BFG or Colway MT etc.

The Sahara is another variation on the Macho/Amazon/Geolander MT theme.

I'm definitely with Eeyore on this one.  If this is going to be your main set of tyres on a daily driven car, then I would encourage you to look at stretching to a first life tyre of some sort.

I don't have any problems, per se, with remoulds.  They are often very good value for money, and I use them alot off road.  But on a road car, you may find them a bit of a false economy.  BFG's like Eeyores regularly see very high mileages and remoulds wear much quicker.

I have no experience of Insa Turbos to quote, but remoulds do vary in quality - even from the same manufacturer!

I had a similar tyre dilemma for my 90, and i plumped for BFG MT's on permenantly, i do 20K road miles every year in my defender and use it at least every other weekend off road, green laning and playing. The BFG's are fab, didnt cost much more than a set of insa turbo's (25% off @ quickfit and ATS) and are by all accounts better tyres as they last better both on and off road :)

i'm currently running bronco goodrides as these are what were on the truck when i bought it however i'll have this problem when i re-tyre as its a daily driver i do 50 miles a day so i'm going to have to compromise road quality with tread pattern and longevity.

I've got Grizzly Claws on mine and they are fantastic, but noisy as hell.

Look cool though and aren't that expensive.
